Alternate Backup Solutions - VPS with SAN Storage?

I've been having quite a few woes with BQ Internet's backup solutions over the last few months. Every few weeks my backups fail consistently for days at a time due to disk space on their backup server being unavailable.

I'm currently paying for a 300 GB allocation and using about 1/3 of that, and am starting to get frustrated. I'm not a fan of overselling, especially when it means that I can't make off-site backups.

I'm wondering if there's a better solution out there, not necessarily a Backup company, but a VPS company that uses SAN storage (Thus the reason why I decided to post this in the Specialty Hosting and Markets section).

I'm simply looking to backup around 100 GB worth of data via RSYNC, and want to actually have DEDICATED disk space allocated, preferably on a SAN. With the ability to expand up to 300 GB if necessary. Any recommendations on providers that would offer this reliably?

Please, no rants about how ____ VPS hosting company is the best company in the world. My needs are very specific, I'm a hosting company myself, simply looking for a reliable off-site backup solution.

    Thanks in advance!

Take a look at BigVPS by colo4jax.com

They utilize SAN in their offerings.

Yep, I contacted Ray a few days ago. I'm looking into other possible options before making a choice. Thanks!

I'm just curious. Have you contacted Scott to see what he said about this? Whenever I have had any issues, Scott has made things right to my satisfaction.

Yep, every few weeks. Things get fixed, work fine for a few more weeks, and the same problems start up again.

That's unfortunate. Is extra space cleared up for you to resolve things or was there server issues?

Extra space is cleared up for me... but it doesn't seem to last for very long. I'm looking into rsync-like scripts for Amazon S3 syncing. I know that Amazon won't run out of disk space. :-)

    Hi Alexander,

The errors that you are getting actually are not related to availability of disk space, as there is plenty of disk space available on the server. The errors can be caused by any number of conditions.

I see that you quoted the output of a "df" command from an SSH shell in your email to us yesterday, however our storage configuration does not support the df command, and so the output is not reliable. If running it a second time gives the appearance of more space being available, it is purely a coincidence. On some of our newer servers, we have disabled the df command completely to avoid any confusion from customers that find it. It is not supported and should not be used.

As I mentioned in my email yesterday, I am still investigating what could be causing the problem for you. I do not see any obvious causes, and other customers on that server have been performing successful backups, so it may take some time to catch what is going on. My best guess is that it is related to the backup method which you're using combined with some unknown factors. I will follow up by email with my findings.

If you have problems in the future, please let us know immediately so that they can be investigated. I see 2 problem reports this year (one about 5 weeks ago, and another today indicating that the errors came back). If you have been having problems every few weeks, we'd like to know about it.

    Scott,

Just from looking at my sent e-mails. I reported this issue April 19, May 28, and Yesterday. I'm sure that if I look in my Archived messages, I could find a lot more cases.

I'm just using straight up RSYNC running in cron on a few servers at various times in the morning...... nothing really special about that. All of those servers report the issues (out of disk), even hours apart.
