;; res options: init recurs defnam dnsrch
    ;; got answer:
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: SERVFAIL, id: 4
;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 0, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 0
    ;; QUERY SECTION:
    ;; domain.com, type = A, class = IN

;; Total query time: 88 msec
    ;; FROM: domain.com to SERVER: default -- 66.98.130.XXX
    ;; WHEN: Thu Apr 15 01:46:22 2004
    ;; MSG SIZE sent: 34 rcvd: 34

    Greetings:

I've found http://www.dnsreport.com/ can often give helpful clues as to what's going on.

You may also want to restart named, and look at /var/log/messages for errors.

    Thank you.

Another site I find very useful is: http://www.checkdns.net/quickcheck.aspx

    thanks guys..

Well that did help me understand more...

DNS server ns1.hostingcompany.com[66.98.130.XXX] is alive, but not authoritative for domain 'domain.com' and didn't return SOA

    Help
CheckDNS received an answer to the query. However, the DNS server indicates that it DOES NOT host the domain (does not have a zone copy). Usually this is a problem, because this DNS server will not be able to serve queries when other DNS servers responsible for the domain will be down.

    Any ideas?
