    UPS Battery Backup

We've got a server that we run in our basement. It's really just a desktop machine running an i7 CPU.

My question is, what kind of battery backup do I need for it to last for up to 20 minutes? I realize there is probably a lot to know before you can answer accurately, but for sake of it just take a guess based on what you would assume to be "regular" use.

I was looking at this product:
    http://www.amazon.com/APC-BE550G-Bac...2878090&sr=8-1

But my concern is that it won't actually last longer than a few minutes of downtime.

I'd say that it'll probaby last you at least 15 minutes unless you use it a lot or your server has a high load. No monitor, right?

For home use only, a lot of the new/refurbs for Ebay offer good value. While I'd never condone using one of these in a datacenter environment, I picked up a couple of 1500VA Liebert units for my home that cost me almost cents. Brand new too.

You can hook up an external battery (deep-cycle RV battery) to a cheap UPS by opening it up and attaching some wires to the battery terminals, and bringing them out through a hole you drill in the case. It voids the warranty of course, and you can fry the unit if you aren't careful. It's what I did for my home computer--we've had 3 different all-day power outages in the past month.
