Looking for my first managed VPS
Hello everyone,
I currently own a reseller account and provide shared hosting. Everything is going very well so I am looking to move up. I would like to start selling shared hosting accounts with the VPS and possibly move into reseller hosting. Since this is my first VPS I am not sure about how much ram is suitable. I know this greatly depends on how many accounts are on the VPS and the nature of their sites. Here is what I know I am looking for:
- 25-40GB Disk Space
- 300+ GB Bandwidth
- Managed Linux VPS
- cPanel/WHM + Fantastico
- RAM ?
- CPU ?
- Support is certainly very important
Budget $40-$50/month
I hope my budget is reasonable for what I am after. I’m not looking for a provider offering the world for nothing but rather looking for quality. I have found some VPS providers that offer what I'm looking for in my budget range so that is a promising sign my budget is right.
I will be keeping my current reseller plan for my site and as a backup. I will also continue to resell this space until I understand how to set-up and maintain the VPS as I currently have no knowledge with Linux, SSH and running a server.
I understand managed doesn't mean too much. Would I be right to assume the majority of companies will install cPanel/WHM, Apache, Linux and Fantastico?
I haven't yet taken a look in the offers forum as I'm not sure about the CPU and RAM I should be looking for.
Thank you very much for any guidance.
George

hello
Any location based requirements?
Sorry I should have mentioned this earlier. I am looking for companies using servers based in the US.
The budget is OK but it may still be a bit less, especially for cPanel and managed services. cPanel itself costs an average of $15/month.
And if you order cPanel with your host, they should install it for you and apache is in stalled with cPanel. Linux is the OS and the OS is installed before you get access to the VPS anyway. Same goes for fantastico, if you ask them, they'll be able to help you.
As for RAM - you'll have to look at how much traffic you get - I can recommend you start with 512mb RAM. Cpanel requires 256mb RAM but with every visitor on the server, RAM is used up.
Have you looked at any companies yet?
Thanks for your honest reply.
The budget is not set in stone nor is the disk space/bandwidth. But cPanel/WHM + Fantastico is a must. Yeah, I see other companies charge extra for this.
Thanks very much for the info. That is great to know.
OK thanks that is much lower than I was expecting. I was expecting to be looking for 1GB+. Thanks very much for your advice.
I have been looking at the following:
hostgator
I currently use HostGators reseller plan and their support is outstanding. I know they are new to VPS hosting but I am certainly considering them.
Their level 3 plan meets what I am looking for minus Fantastico which is no problem because I can purchase the licence separately. This plan includes:
Linux Managed
cPanel
30GB Disk Space
500GB Bandwidth
CPU - 1.13 GHZ
2 IP addresses
Price - $49.95 per month.
I have also been looking at LiquidWeb. I have read many positive reviews about them. I know they have higher prices but they are also on my maybe list:
20 Gigabytes Storage
400 GBs Transfer
512MB RAM Guaranteed
4 IP Addresses
Cpanel/WHM/Fantastico/XController
Fully Managed Support
Price - $65/month
Thanks once again
George

So far your budget looks reasonable but a bit hard to determine since you're not sure how much RAM and CPU you'll be using. RAM and CPU is probably the more outstanding elements in a VPS so you'll definitely need to determine how much you need first before getting a VPS.

Thanks for your reply.
I am looking for enough RAM/CPU to host perhaps 20-50 shared hosting accounts on the server depending on their sites. I think 512MB will be perfect to start with as many companies seem to allow upgrades of 128MB when needed. As far as CPU I don't have any ideas as of yet. As I say I have no experience with servers as of yet.
I would also like to add your VZWEB02 + cPanel/WHM addon to the maybe list. I have read many reviews positive reviews of your company in the past. I also like the fact you started to specialise in VPS/dedicated.

512MB dedicated RAM should be sufficient. The great thing about going with a VPS is that you'll be able to upgrade as you require more resources.
