To be more specific what are your plans for upgrading your machine at home and work to Windows 8 and do you have an upgrade plan for upgrading your servers to Windows 8 server. I mentioned nothing about changing your website. Though this may be something expected from users upgrading to Windows 8.

Nothing is really needed really. Install the new os and install your programs. If something doesn't work google solves it. All you need. If people need to properly plan for home computers then it's obviously an incompetent person running the OS.

No reason to put windows 8 on a server either. The only thing that in my opinion needs to be done is training co-workers how to use it regardless if it is used or not. Once an OS becomes EOL and we upgrade, one point or another we may have to use windows 8.

I'm waiting for my work friends to catch up with the upcoming of Windows 8 server, SQL Server 2012, Exchange Server 2012, Sharepoint 2012, etc. When they get a taste of Windows 8 server and the features underneath they are going to go crazy over it wanting to learn this and that about it. Many know the developer/preview editions are currently available but haven't taken a peak at them yet.

I am hoping the ReFS file system enhancements will make it to the client at launch time. As the protective and virtualization features built into Windows 8 alone should help make life easier for the admins, developers and users that have only been something you could get on your Linux/Unix based systems.

With integration of Hyper-V now in the Windows 8 client might help more for development, testing and more in the near future. I think it will take some getting used to the new Metro interface on the client along with the new "visual enhancements" on the server.

If the Hyper-V isolation is good this time around (ability to crash other VMs and the host from a VM) enough users can keep their host Windows 8 system lightweight and use different VMs for certain tasks to help increase security and the possibly uses of Hyper-V. I know Citrix and VMware may not like it but competition is good and with the pricing of their products this and RedHat's Virtualization options should help get things back in check.

More like a re-branding of Windows 7 + Tablet Metro UI.

As a rule I normally don't switch to a new version of windows until the 1st service pack has been released. I may drop it onto a test machine or a VM but, I wont use it yet.

in case you have not understood - even the users who are visiting my web sites, are still using windows xp. half of them. they didnt even upgrade to 7.

    ............

you talk as if we 'have to' or 'should' upgrade to windows 8. actually you are talking as if everyone 'is' going to upgrade, and just asking how.

    we arent upgrading.

Your thinking too deep into a simple question, no plan is a valid answer.

'no plan' would be for a situation that is going to happen.

for a situation not going to happen, plan, or no plan does not apply.

Sure, that was good practice back in the day.

But at the speed of which Microsoft release Windows Updates and fixes, and that millions of new machines will get Windows 8 OEM, there's no real gain to waiting for a service pack.

    Exactly
They'll be forcing metroui on individuals, and that's jut utter and complete crap for a real computer. It might be acceptable for a tablet, but I'd certainly stay far away from this POS on a real computer.

This won't be the "future" of Windows, it will be the death of it. Nobody, and I do mean nobody, in their right mind is going to install this on a production PC, because it is complete and utter crap.

This isn't a few minor tweaks to a UI everyone's been familiar with for close to 30 years, this is a HUGE rearrangement of everything, it is a piece of software that will attempt to force everyone to learn how to do things all over again and that's just not going to fly with most people.

It's fairly easy to disable MetroUI if you're not a fan.

That registry hack is no longer valid, it was disabled in the consumer preview. In fact, the registry key is no longer even there.

Not sure why people complain about something that they haven't even tried it.

I've installed windows 8 CP on my laptop (sony VGN-FW series) which is a vista compatible laptop and I have to admit, even on CP release, its much faster than windows 7 that was installed on it until last night.

I have the same amount of applications on it that I had on WIN7 but it performs much better now.

I would upgrade to Windows 8 as soon as I receive an update from Microsoft announce final version release.

When laptops say windows vista and 7 compatible isn't it pretty much just marketing junk to trick users to buy it over a different laptop? I don't mind windows 8 myself though. Just sticking with my current OS as it won't reach end of life for awhile. When it does, windows 8 won't be considered new at all.

What have you done about things like gaming and getting common windows applications working? I would switch off windows if I could simply to save 100 dollars each time I have to install a new os on a new system but due to my gaming and heavy use of some Microsoft applications, I haven't been able to.

hmmm. come to think of it, i was able to run major titles through wine under ubuntu. stuff like sims 3, mount & blade work very well. some work better than they work in xp, due to the wine xp engine being better optimized.
