ICANN to Ban Use of "WWW"

http://www.bbspot.com/News/2005/09/i....html?from=rss

Quote:
A recent study showing millions hours of lost productivity, has prompted the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to ban the use of "www" in domain names.
But this last paragraph got me wide-eyed:

Quote:
Web sites not following the rules will face fines of $10,000 or confiscation of their sites by ICANN.
Woooooooooooooo...

Wow... this sounds serious to some people...

Maybe we should educate folks to use CTRL+ENTER for dot coms (and SHIFT+ENTER and CRTL+SHIFT+ENTER in FireFox)
that will save another 3 sec.

(but, are we serious here about the fine by ICANN???)

I think the fine will only apply in extreme circumstances.

The user might just have their domain confiscated, minus the fine.

But what about domains like ultimeWWW.com ? I know that's a company. Are they only referring to domains like wwwyahoo.com ?

I didn't read the full article, by the way.

From the post above it refers to the actual domain name as in domain.com. www is just an A record and I believe this wouldnt apply here as that is not the domain only domain.com is.

That's what I was thinking. I'd like to see this press release on icann.org. There's a big difference between them thinking about a policy change and actually implementing a fairly large fine.

Nice catch. I tried looking for something to tell me if the site was legit or not and totally missed the footer.

Sometimes, when I can't get a new link to work, I prefix the missing "www." to the domain name and, VOILA, it works. Does anyone know what percentage of domain names out there are hosted on name servers that require the leading and really unnecessary www.?

Just kidding, folks! Smile!

Dave,
I knew the moment I read it. I posted kind of obscure just because I really wanted to see the reactions (same as you). Been watching this thread with in hand and enjoying it immensely.

I'm all in favor of the idea. Forcing www to be a reserved subdomain name is a terrible idea, especially when it's required.

Whoops! Sorry, I forgot that you're actually the first to catch on.

Great read anyway, eh?
