Lost LVM Volume Group. What's the procedure to recover it?

After a reboot, the volume group on my server completely disappeared.

    Code:
        [root@dal01 log]# vgdisplay
        No volume groups found

        [root@dal01 /]# lvdisplay
        No volume groups found

        [root@dal01 log]# df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
        /dev/sda1 97G 72G 21G 78% /
        tmpfs 12G 0 12G 0% /dev/shm

        [root@dal01 log]# fdisk -l

WARNING: GPT (GUID Partition Table) detected on '/dev/sda'! The util fdisk doesn't support GPT. Use GNU Parted.

    vgcfgrestore says this:

    Code:
        [root@dal01 backup]# vgcfgrestore vg_dal01
Couldn't find device with uuid EUBjbv-JVpH-6QLv-yAxX-dopZ-CDHg-BOcpXa.
Cannot restore Volume Group vg_dal01 with 1 PVs marked as missing.
          Restore failed.
    There's still a backup:

    Code:
        [root@dal01 backup]# cat /etc/lvm/backup/vg_dal01

However I want to make sure that I can still recover it without messing it up even more.

I found this link: http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/Cl...tarecover.html but I'm not sure it is the way to go.

    Anybody care to help, please?

Restoring the backup should work, I had a staff member wipe the drive with nulls one time and it worked fine for me

As long as you've not written over it, you can do a vgcfgrestore from the most recent file in /etc/lvm/archive.

If all you've done is a reboot though you shouldnt need to do this, it could just be the volume group is inactive.

What happens if you do pvscan and vgscan?

Just to clarify, *do not* <<snipped>>. That will wipe the drive. The wording on this post is somewhat unclear.

vgchange -ay can reactivate inactive volume groups which may be what you need to do here

If you have the ability to clone the drive to a spare that may be a good idea so you can try some suggestions online without having to worry about data loss.

The server was/is with you guys. Would it be possible to clone a drive of a server on LSTN?
