A normal range for retail domains is around 10$/year

You can buy them from the registrar of your choice.

All promotions like that are for the first year only.

Most of the promotions are for a year only. Try searching through a series of registrar's and look for their transfer promotions along with their WHOIS guard promotion.

Exactly and it is rarther impossible to pay for e.g. .com domain about $5/year. The prices for retail domains usually equals from $8 to $11 and that's a fair deal I think.

however the privacy at reseller club is for free ALWAYS, which makes them unbeatable for those who need privacy, which itself cost about 5usd/year

I really love name.com and their interface (which is horrible for example at reseller, GD and many others) and their privacy code is PRIVACYPLEASE, but lasts just for the one year as mentioned above

If we are talking about .com then USD 7.85 could be the absolute lowest as this is what the registrar has to pay and that would mean a profit of exactly USD 0. Everything lower would mean a loss and can only mean it is either temporary and/or they hope to cross-sell.

As to a registrar, I could highly recommend nameѕilo.com. They also offer permanent free whois privacy.

You need to account for transaction fees.

True, so it actually moves towards USD 8.

Beware on some registrars that offers 0.99 domains like register.com, they offered a 0.99 domain a few months ago but the renewal is 38$. You can transfer it before it expires though.

I very much agree with @gojmgo you must be careful when selecting a domain provider - I would make sure that you read their small print.
