After about 10 years out of the hosting industry, I'd like to start again by offering mainly VPS and eventually dedicated servers. I'm a long way from starting with real customers but I have a few friends I can host to get started.

Anyway, for my first plan, I was considering offering this VPS option:
Quad core intel server
1GB dedicated ram
100GB disk space
Unmetered 10mbps connection with 100mbps burst
No overselling

If I have 16GB memory in my server with no overselling, then I can put 16 customers on that server or 4 per core. Does that sound reasonable, or is that overloaded? How much would a plan like that retail for, I was thinking in the $25-$50 range.

So what memory is the host operating system/hypervisor going to use?

You should be looking at 15x customers and 1GB for the host OS/virtualization technology.

The disk setup and CPU is important. Get a Xeon E3 and a 4x disk Hardware RAID10 array and you are ready to go

Good point. It was late last night when I posted. I'm looking at some surplus Dell servers with the Xeon quad core 2.13ghz. I still haven't really decided on a disk setup.

Seems pretty good, you can easily get the 25-50 dollars you're looking for. You'd want to test different RAID configurations before you go public to get the best for your server. I find that hardware RAID generally has better performance over software, but just mess with it and find out. If you can squeeze a extra processor out of the box you may be better off. What virtualization platform are you running? Whichever product it is make sure that you allocate enough for the license and the colo fees.
