This is probably a stupid question but is cloud hosting managed? And what about backups?

Every cloud is different, some are managed, some semi managed, some include backups, firewalls, etc.

Yes it is like shared and reseller hosting it all depends on what the company offers. Now when you purchase a true cloud it is like a dedicated server so you will need to purchase your own cPanel license either provided by yourself or your provider.

Most cloud hosting is just like shared hosting. But cloud server can be unmanaged or semi managed. Beware and ask before you order.

For backups look into R1 Soft or one that your provider offers

As many have stated you need to consult your cloud hosting company. Ask lots of questions and get definitive answers. Also even if they offer a full backup and management it is always in your best interest to pull a backup of your site and DB and keep a hard copy for yourself. Then test your backup up for data loss and corruption. Fully managed or not you should always be prepared.

Ideally, your chosen cloud should even offer you the ability to download your server image and take it with you if you wish
