    * Dell Poweredge R710 Benchmark

    Hi,

I was about to purchase Dell R710 for my small business. The server's specifications :-

    Dual E5620
    16GB RDIMM

Since R710 come with embedded 4 x Gbe which will be fully utilize for LAN storage. The question is regarding the hard disk speed. What kind of HDD do I need to utilize 4 gigabit NIC? From the calculation I need 512MBps transfer (4096/8).

    Criteria

    1. HDD speed not overkill the network speed
    2. HDD speed not lower than network speed

    HDD Combination

    6 x 450GB 15K SAS 6Gbps
    OR
    6 x 600GB 10K SAS 6Gbps
    OR
    6 x 500GB 7.2K Nearline SAS 6Gbps
    OR
    6 x 500GB 7.2k SATA 3Gbps

    Array

Raid 5 or Raid 10. Simply said, I need average write and read speed +- 512MBps (4xGbe)

    Remarks

    • I'm planning to use H700 Integrated with 512MB Cache
    • I only need 1.3-1.5TB array size which divided into 4 LUNs
    • The system purposely act storage server for LAN environment

    Thank you for help

Why wouldn't you simply get an R510/R515 which allows you to have more disks connected to the RAID controller? They aren't that far apart in cost and this is what they were designed to do. Also if you are only using 6 disks you can pretty much rule out SATA.

I agree with XLHost, if your after disk performance you need more spindles therefore the R510 or R515 with 12bays fully loaded with SAS drives is going to give you some serious disk I/O.

    1. I don't want to invest more on network card (quad port). R710 had quad embedded NIC

    2. Besides, 12 HDD SATA was benchmarked on 1000MBps average read, it's just way overkill.

    Hi,

A quad port nic is much less expensive than going from SATA to SAS and you're not considering any growth potential.

The capacity will never be increase. It will be 1.5TB forever.

    Btw, I have changed to 8 x Dell 2.5' 500GB Near Line SAS 6Gbps 7.2k

Do you think configure raid 10 using all 8 drives can utilize the 4Gbps speed?
