    Registering .com domains

Now i dunno if anybody has posted this b4, honestly i didnt bother to check but one thing I hate when trying to get a .com domain fr your business is that almost everything is taken, but thats not what frusterates me the most...What frusterates me the most is that more than half the registered domains are not in use. these domains are just sitting there in the database, sometimes sites resell the domains and what not, but wht dont they just allow them to be registered after a yeah of un activity?

If you mean there's no active website, so what - domains were around a long time before the WWW and will be here long after its forgotten

You can't tell if a domain is being used or not. Unless the owner specifically states that they aren't using it.
I could tell you a joke about UDP. But I'm not sure you would get it!

I think he means they are parked pages. That for most, there is no development plans and are just to be sold. People have to realize that domains are a market like anything else. There is a supply and demand. It is a business.

Its similar to real estate. People buy land but do not build a house and wait for the right offer to sell their land. Its similar with the domains, they would keep domains idle until the right offer comes. A single right offer would cover up the renewal cost of several years so its worth the gamble.

There are people who invest in domains and try reselling them with good price. So they make business of this.

Yes. I also think that some inactive domains are simply failed businesses. Perhaps they launched something, it didn't pan out, and they closed it down. They may have still kept the domain name registration active afterward, even without a live website any longer.

Whenever I close a site or project I add 5 years onto the domain to prevent it from falling into someone else's hands while there is still traffic and reputation to it. Once it's died off there is no need to keep the domain registered unless the domain is particularly valuable.

Allot of people; myself included register domains for future projects or just to keep them out of the hands of others.

    How exactly is that selfish?
Do you think other people should be entitled to my domains?

If a domian runs out, or you let it just die as you say, doesnt it become available for other people to register again?

How is forward planning selfish ?

I booked my holiday a year ago, to ensure I got the hotel, location and dates I wanted. People booking after me have to settle for smaller room, different beach or not go - is that selfish as well ?
