Thumbs down Honda hacked: 283,000 car owners lose personal data

While Tokyo-based Sony Corp. battles massive data security breaches, Japanese carmaker Honda is confronting its own online challenge — the theft of personal information from 283,000 Honda and Acura customers in Canada.
Jerry Chenkin, executive vice-president and chief compliance officer at Honda Canada Inc., confirmed Thursday that names, addresses and vehicle identification numbers were taken from the company's e-commerce websites myHonda and myAcura, with suspicious activity on the site first detected in late February.
In a letter to affected vehicle owners dated May 13 and obtained by the Star, Honda Canada said it was alerted by unusual volume on the sites, including “some unauthorized attempts to access account information.” The letter said financial information was not compromised.

No not really. We can only trick ourselves into thinking they're secure.

Besides some convenience, will consumers lose anything?

If their credit cards were stolen, banks will not charge the customers.

And online purchase I do with my Citibank credit card requires a verification confirmation via SMS.

So what's the damage besides reputation risk to Honda and Sony recently?

I agree with you! Perhaps, due to the amount of people who HATE BIG COMPANIES?

Even when a computer is powered down and sitting on a locked closet, it can still be stolen.

Will the release of VINs and owner names/addresses have significant consequences?

The only thoughts that come to mind are either privacy-related or in terms of thieves being able to (in theory) know where certain pricey vehicles are parked.

Granted, however, that such a release of data is still pretty sobering (and scary).

I don't think if I would personally bet against Honda long-term based on this, though! I think I might lose with such a bet against them. =P

We have lived in a world far to long where "Professional Hackers" was only seen on movie screens, the type that try to take down companies of large scale.

The reality is that that time is now, i think we can expect a massive growth of security brands for companys looking at new ways to protect. Although the hackings are not good, the advancements that will come from all of this should be.

Like they say with war, technologys advance upto 50 years during war because they NEED to. This time is now.

Not really, if they did, they would not be hacked
