Searching for CHEAP VPS for personal website + shell to play with
Hi all,
I'm searching for a cheap VPS that will host my simple personal website and whatever scripts I might be playing with at the time.
I'd also like a shell to play with, since I'm an advanced user and like doing various hacks (maybe a reporting server, email reminder, whatever I'm goofing with).
I'd like it to be CentOS based (or easy for me to install that) and want to setup Nginx on it.
What can be had for <=$10/mo?
Reliability is important as this might end up being a website that goes on business cards. Otherwise, I'm pretty down with whatever.
THANK YOU!0

Look at lowendbox.com for any kind of budget VPS but don't expect reliability in the first place.

Strangely, $10 seems like a decent budget these days for a small unmanaged VPS. Ramhost has been good for me (at half that price!) and there are a few others that get regular recommendations here. Be aware though that new players in this market often don't last long so if you're risk-averse choose an established provider with a good rep. And of course, no matter who you choose, keep your own off-site backups.

BurstNET seems to be the good choice for playing around.

Hi,
You didn't say your location , so if you are ok with UK, i can recommend Europhase.net. Excellent service and reliability.i'm using their service for more than 10 months.very quick friendly support, no automated answers. you can find my reviews about them (use search).
BTW , i'm using their XEN Package,Xen is in UK and their openVZ is US based (Personally i don't like OpenVZ).0

I have a $5.95 VPS at Burst.net (512MB RAM, 20GB Disk) that has been my playground for a month or two. It sounds like you are experienced enough to get a basic unmanaged VPS such as this and install a webserver (Apache or NGINX), MySql and PHP from the command line. There are some free control panels that can help manage the server aspects, Webmin and Kloxo.
For a newbie, or someone just wanting to get a website on a VPS, I don't usually recommend an unmanaged VPS. There's a lot of configuration involved, and quite a few things you can do wrong. But you seem to be a good candidate for attacking the learning curve.0

The top providers from lowendbox.com were voted and the results are here : http://www.lowendbox.com/wiki/top-providers
My uptime monitoring shows Quickweb as my top uptime out of the 8 VPS providers I have service with (including Burst and 123systems). My VPS is set up with Debian, Nginx, Mysql, PHP, Postfix+SASL, Dovecot, Spamassassin, chkrootkit, iptables firewall, and maildrop humming along around 90MB of RAM (this is essentially what I'm running, http://madspace2.rajeshprakash.com/lowendvpsconfig.htm)
I have a BuyVM $15/yr box, a Ramhost KCMO-1, and a Quickweb Test Box VZ II. All packages are less than $3 / month. You won't go wrong with any of those 3 providers for what you mentioned.0

That listing is subjective to the visitors of that website only.
LEB has it's own following and type of visitor, and that listing of top providers is based on that website's visitors only. Those providers that keep getting voted in are most likely the result of heavy participation on that website and/or those providers getting people to vote for them. Providers without heavy presence on that site, actively pushing for such votes, are at a voting disadvantage, and the list is completely non-accurate to what is going on the rest of the world and the hosting industry outside of LEB.
PS - This is not a knock on LEB (or the providers listed), that website rocks, but the reality is that the LEB top providers list is irrelevant, and inaccurate outside of the LEB site.

Keep in mind that performance and monitoring of VPS service levels is not like monitoring a Dedicated Server. Providers typically have MANY nodes, and you might just be monitoring one heavily loaded or empty one. The majority of a provider's nodes may be performing completely differently than the one node that you just happen to be monitoring. So not really accurate to have one VPS at providers and state that they are better than another, when really you need MANY VPS at each provider to get a feel of how their service levels really are overall for VPS services...

And you guys have already double charged me, according to my CC company, and both times, you claimed my card was declined. I still have a balance on the account so that's holding up new account creation.

Double your budget to $20 and get yourself a Linode 512 if reliability and speed matter to you.

I do agree with everything you said. I've had multiple VPS with the same host, some of which had great uptime, others not so good. It depends on the node.
In my previous post, I was simply commenting that QW had the highest uptime of any of my VPS with only the 8 providers I have access to. I could never attest that QW has the best uptime of all providers. Having said that though, they do have a reputation has being a HA provider.0
