How long does it take to propagate?
Hi i have a dedicated server with HostGator and domain registration with GoDaddy. I want to add another website to the server and I have been unable to do that for 2 days.
I thought it would be very simple. Just set the name servers of the domain to NS1.yourdomain.com and NS2.yourdomain.com and wait.
It has been almost 2 days and the website is still not showing and I cannot log into FTP either.
So how you does this process usually take you?

Hi,
The propagation period can take up to 24-72 hours.
You can use some tools in order to check whether the propagation period is completed. For example you try to test it at: http://www.whatsmydns.net/
You will also need to check the settings that are not set up properly on your server at intodns.comRegards,

It depends on the TLD, but in my experience the propagation for .com, .net and .org domains usually takes less than one hour, in most cases only a few minutes.

If you set it two days ago and it's not working, then chances are one of two things:
1. The domain isn't on the server or is misconfigured on the server.
2. The nameservers are misconfigured either on the server that handles the nameserver records, or at the domain registrar.█ Michael Denney - MDDHosting.com - Proudly hosting more than 37,700 websites since 2007.

Check from another ISP/proxy if your website works. If it does then its matter of time when it will work for your ISP too. If it doesn't then there is surely some problem in the configurations.

This is what I have noticed in my experience:
1. It takes between an hour to 48 hours for propagation.
2. Takes about one hour if you do not poll the website that means your ISP do not fetch the NS info unless requested for an hour or two.
3. However if you keep polling, your ISP will fetch the old outdated NS info and keep it in their database unless updated in the next 48 hours.
Which is a very long time... and your confusion is understandable.Name123.com [ We are online Since 2004! ]
