Arrow Who has been to Vietnam?

I am heading over that way in June (my first ever overseas trip ) and wondered if any of you members have some stories to tell

In particular I'd like to know how you adapted, what to eat and what to avoid. Security tips, areas to avoid. Best area to stay in Ho Chi Minh City (which is where we will be based)

    Fire away!

You can come to visit Cambodia after leaving Vietnam. There are thousand temples and a lot of natural resorts.

Just two days ago I watched Justin Shapiro of Globe Trekker visiting Vietnam. Its quite depressing after I learned that $1 = 10,000 Dong but I guess its 20,000 Dong now based in Oanda currency converter. I guess this is an old episode.

Do you might want to check this clips for that episode:

Opps sorry about that, I just noticed that now. It is also not available in my country. I just copy the link in Google when I found it.

Vietnam looks gorgeous and I've had it on my list of holiday destinations for a couple of years but not had chance to get away during their season yet. I'm hoping to get chance soon though.

I love these kind of countries. It is cheap and beautiful. But you need to watch out for yourself, especially crossing streets.

I lived in Vietnam for most of my childhood, it's a very beautiful place indeed.

Here are face place to visit (I don't have enough posts to post links so you can search on wikipedia)

    - Ha Long Bay: Breath taking scene in northern Vietnam
    - Nha Trang: one of the most famous beaches
    - Da Lat: A popular tourist destination
    - World Biggest Cave: This is where I would like to visit someday.
    - Hue: The capital of the Nguyen Dynasty back in the days. you can still visit some of the historic monuments.

Also, keep all your valuable from plain site and don't wear jeweleries just to be safe!

Hope you have a wonderful trip!

The closest thing to Vietnam for me was a Vietnam reenactment.

I have many friends who have been to Vietnam (2 of which are Vietnamese).

One thing you need to be aware of is visiting clubs/bars. Often they have a "hidden" cover charge. Whereas you see the person at the door and pay them, but once inside there is another door with a much higher "fee" and they intimidate you into paying again. As like any other Country there is always the "tourism" areas and "local" areas. So make friends with the locals and you'll find great food and hospitality.

If you have more specific questions I can always ask my friends for you.

I actually went to Vietnam for two weeks in June of 2009. (You are in for some hot weather, obviously).

I stayed in Hanoi for the entire trip. I know that there is a pretty big difference in the culture between North and South Vietnam, but I had an excellent trip.

    My Tips:

-Fly Singapore Airlines if at all possible. (I did Houston -> Moscow -> Singapore -> Hanoi)
-Get some custom-made suites and dress clothes. They are great and super cheap.
-You can get DVDs for next-to-nothing.
-Don't take any taxis that are not city-sponsored. Do not take any motorbikes or other forms of transportation or you will get ripped off.
-Street food can actually be really good, just be careful.
-Be warned: you are in for a culture shock. It was my first overseas trip and I was shocked mostly at the sanitation (or lack-there-of).
-Rolling blackouts are a real issue. And when it is 100 degrees at night, you might notice.
-Don't use the water for anything, including washing your face.
-You can use your debit card to withdraw cash in their currency, but your bank may not be very gentle with fees. I would avoid doing this too often.
-Visit some "American War" memorials. I saw the Hanoi Hilton and the John McCain statue.

You will have a blast. I will never forget the trip and would actually love to go back.

How long will you be staying?

June here can be hot. If you go to HCMC, where you will stay depends on where you want to visit. I know many foreigners stay in the downtown, but it's crowded. And if this is a vacation, I would suggest you stay away the downtown. Staying in another district like Tan Binh. It's near the Tan Son Nhat airport. You might also want to visit the west area, that includes Ben Tre, Vinh Long, Can Tho, etc. provinces.

I have some friends who are very enjoyed with street life, where you can eat many delicious food. However, without a local guider, you should not try If you go to Hanoi, make sure to let me know, I can show you some!

I have not been to Vietnam, but I have traveled elsewhere quite a bit.

This may sound obvious, but be very alert when it comes to security. Do not display valuables, be careful with cash, and consider utilizing a money belt for added security.

Or better yet, don't bring a lot of cash with you. Crimes happen more frequently since the last time I visited and have been reported a lot by local newspapers. I recommend to stay alert at all times. Pickpockets and other thieves may use force to threaten you for money or valuable items. Just explore the area with a trusted guide.
