You should definitely get a fully managed VPS, but at $30/mo and with enough resources for hosting clients that's going to be hard to find. HG's cheapest fully managed plan is $40/mo.

Take a look at knownhost.com! They have something within your budget and are praised here on WHT for their services & support.

How many accounts do you have on your reseller? Are you going to transfer them or is the VPS for new clients?

With a $30 budget you can get something small probably 768 to 1GB RAM and continue to upgrade as needed.

What is your Control Panel preference? RAM? HDD? Bandwidth?

I just did what you are planning to do. I had 22 accounts at the time, and now have 30. I'm at MDDHosting.com and can recommend them highly. They might be out of your price range now, but check the offers forum here (they often run specials, as do other companies often recommended like Knownhost).

The problem with your budget is that cPanel costs the host (or you) about $15 a month, so you're really leaving about $15 for the rest of the service. You might get much more if you can increase your budget by another $10 or so.

But your best bet is to look / research some companies you see listed on here and that have some reviews. A tip I always took in, if a company has nothing but positive reviews there's some kind of catch. Not everyone will be happy with every host. I always look for the host that has both some good, and some bad and then I weed out each side and think what the truth is if it was the client or the provider.

You can also check out the VPS offers section, after over looking it this morning I seen alot of company's offering cPanel managed VPS's, I don't know how good they are but that's for you to trim, and weed out which one would be best for you.

I see a KnownHost advertisement on WHT every day, and I hear great things about them, so I don't think you would go wrong with them if you do some research on them and make sure they fit all your requirements.

Keep us posted which one you go to. I'm interested to hear which one and how you like them!

Then at the moment you should be fine with 1GB to 1.5GB RAM.

You can tell your clients "unlimited", but that is called over-selling. You would have to watch out how much you sell and make sure you do not over sell your VPS.

Yes you can do that with a VPS, it's called overselling. You have to be very careful though when doing unlimited, many providers fail by offering more than they can reasonably sustain for the price they charge.

You can tell 'em that, and set the plans to 'UNLIMITED' in WHM package creation / settings but when they exceed the VPS limits they might be complaining to you for lack of performance. With a VPS you don't have a restriction to how many accounts you can host though you are unlimited that way, but with your diskspace, bandwidth once that exceeds to what your VPS is, your clients will be maxed out to if there is no more room left on the Virtual Server so you are able to offer this but if you see clients growing and needing more room to be truely unmetered it's good for you to find a provider that has easy upgrades, where nothing will be affected for upgrading your virtual machine when you need more resources (disk, bandwidth) when you have a few of your clients say getting to 70% of there package resources that you provide them.

I would really suggest going to a managed cPanel vps provider as they will be able to help you with each step, with any question, and also help you with setting up your virtual server, and also some will help you even move your clients from your reseller over to your vps with the same packages you have setup on your reseller.

A vps with cpanel gives you alot more options, control, and access to provide to your clients and also allows you to setup your shared community how you want. I really do suggest starting out with something that gives you room to grow, and will provide for your clients also going with a managed provider.

That being said, you should be good.. There's plenty of providers offering something that will fit your budget to start but I would ask them a few key points..

    1. Is it easy to upgrade when I need?
    2. Help me setup my cpanel vps to be secure/monitor it to make sure its online
    3. Can you help me transfer my accounts over to my VPS?

Please keep us posted on where you go, and how you future is with them and your shared hosting business.

Thank you, and best wishes to you my friend!

VS1 is definitely not enough. It only has approx 200 MB of RAM. You cannot even have cPanel on it. You need to be looking above 768 MB Ram.

You might be able to. It really depends on how much the clients are using now.

That is pushing it a bit. Remember, you should be able to upgrade from where you start so start with something that will give you a little bit of room but the ability to grow further on down the road without breaking your budget.
