I'm lucky to have a great boss, great people skills, excellent project manager, terrible technical skills, luckily he acknowledges this weakness and doesn't attempt to pretend like he understands some of the deeper technical stuff.

In Finance/Accounting you get bosses that don't want to see you succeed, throw you under the bus, tell you one thing and then sell you out for it 1 minute later. However, my boss is the man. If i'm working late, he stays to help finish anything in a timely, efficient manner. If I need to leave early, take time off with short notice he has no problems at all. Granted we're a large S&P, Fortune 500 company and have a large department ... he's still good to work for. I don't mind staying late if he needs me too.

It is sad to say that this is amazing. Very few people anymore are able to get a boss this good. You should be very proud to be working for a company like that. I hope my employees see me that way.

I work as a business analyst for a bank. My boss is secretive. He will ask me to pull data but would not involve me in his analysis. It is understandable if the boss doesn't want to see you/me succeed because they want it for themselves. How does it look if the employee reporting to him is contributing more?
If he is secretive, I will be secretive to him too. Since I own the data, I understand the data better, and I can do my analysis and bypass him by reporting to senior management.
It just sucks that we are not working as a team.

I don't think you should withold from your boss ...remember at the end of the day he gets last say. I have a direct report to two Financial Manager (obviously 1 is my true, direct boss), but they're both awesome. The more questions I ask the more confident they feel. They've allowed some of my cost / benefit analysis roll all the way up to the CFO of our profit center. They even acknowledge that I addressed the issue, found the solution with minor modifications by them (which is true they did help) but they are always looking to benefit me it seems. It's great and if I told you the company name, you'd be shocked

To climb the corporate ladder, an employee not only has to work hard but also play office politics. Do you agree? How is your work place like?
Yes, I will heed your advice, don't with-hold anything from my boss; but like you I am reporting to two person, one is Head of Credit Risk, the other is team leader of analytics team. It is good that your boss gives you credit. It sucks when they don't.
So I am thinking to submit my analysis to both of them, and even share it with our front-line business heads. Currently everything I do is channeled through the team leader.

My boss always think to increase his business and is less careful for employees benefits. He also not allows HR policies that help to employees but introduces HR policies favorable to companies.

I stay out of office politics. My first boss expected 110% and planted his foot in my @$$ if I didnt give it and I respect him for it. My current boss is likable, tells you right away if you did something incorrectly and gives me praise and an ex-frat boy so he has a touch of Tony DiNozzo in him which might be why I like him.
