Thanks Patrick. I just looked I think softlayer might be the biggest yet in terms of datacenters. rackspace is more popular though. They also got a big boost from a very popular forum (I think you all know what I'm talking about).

Who Has the Most Web Servers?

    http://www.datacenterknowledge.com/a...t-web-servers/

Updated, Nov. 2010 to reflect SoftLayer’s acquisition of The Planet and strong growth at Akamai, which has grown from 48,000 to 73,000 servers in the past 18 months. The totals for OVH and Rackspace have also been updated:

OVH: 80,000 servers (company, Nov. 2010)

SoftLayer: 76,000 servers (company, Nov. 2010)

Akamai Technologies: 73,000 servers (company, Nov. 2010)

    1&1 Internet: 70,000 servers (company, Feb. 2010)

Facebook: 60,000 servers (estimate, Oct. 2009)

Rackspace: 63,996 servers (company, Nov. 2010)

    iWeb: 14,000 servers (company)

    Peer1/ServerBeach: 10,277 servers (company)
Missing in the list LeaseWeb: 36,000+ servers (NetDirekt, Dec. 2010)

    I guess Online.net has over 10,000 servers.

I think these lists are not that accurated. I think Superb, Interserver, Gnax, and many others in the US have more than 10,000 servers. If you consider the entire world I think the list is near useless.

I would guess all the interest in the hosting industry from outside investment is all the talk of 'cloud computing' and companies outsourcing their existing servers and IT onto large clouds. If things continue along these lines, I can see why it would be a good market to be in and probably some good quick returns are possible

It might also just be that, if you buy multiple cie, that each have their own small datacenter ( read : closet with portable AC ) , why not buy an already very good infrastructure to consolidate everything from all your cie there.

iWeb does custom cage | cabinet | private rooms already. Power, AC, uplinks... everything is taken care of.

    that would be very smart.

Not that surprised that OVH & 1&1 are up there but I'm sure the planet/softlayer etc aren't on there.

Quite surprised at some of the debt rates that iweb are paying, 17% - sheeesh

Hosting consolidation began a few years ago and now that many corps are sitting huge piles of cash right now, most have increased their efforts to acquire. This trend will continue.

It would not surprise me at all if it is indeed EIG that is trying to buy iWeb.

Absolutely right! I can't believe the garbage out of iWeb, seriously. year lease required, horrible hardware, horrible pricing. One can hope this buyout attempt makes them more competitive.

There hardware is indeed fail how I would describe it as well as their support.

When we were with them we paid the $75.00 if my memory servers me right to avoid contracts and the $75.00 was per server....

I'm completely happy with Host Dime we have 16+ dedicated servers with them alone and Iweb could of had us if they weren't such a fail.

Most of our customers are on a month-to-month contract, no year lease required. We use only SuperMicro boards as does Softlayer and other good providers. As for pricing, last time I compared with competitors we were very competitive. You have the right to share your opinion but I only wanted to correct the wrong assumptions. @semoweb, sorry we were not the right fit for you, I think your experience has been widely discussed.

Try again. All you have to do is try to signup for a new server and you're thrown into a year long lease requirement. Nice try, but, incorrect

Motherboards aren't the only 'hardware' in a server. In every server, I've had the unfortunate experience of dealing with from your company, the hard drive has gone out within weeks of delivery to client.

Here, you'll get a pass. As of late (the last week or so), your prices have been somewhat competitive, however, for years they were not so. In fact, your company even quoted me a price on a server that was at least double, if not more, the industry standard price less than 6 months ago. Of course, because of the required 'year contract', I told you where to put the offer, but, don't fool yourself into thinking you've been competitive all along.

I never had any problems with iWeb. The hardware was decent, the network was great, the pricing was decent and the support was alright - pretty much what you would find with any big name provider. They're definitely not a "fail" of a provider but I suppose that's subjective depending on your expectations... only complaint was the ordering process of having to fax in ID and what not.

For a .CA provider, definitely worth a look ... for a generic location does-not-matter provider, I'd personally skip over them because of the ID hassle.

Maybe you guys changed things ever since I was there but back then it was mandatory for 12 month agreement unless you paid $75.00 per server.

As for it being widely discussed yes you are right I do discuss this any time your name is brought up I would hate for some one to choose you and to be told over the phone that you guys cannot do support via phone for this long as you have other clients surely enough I remember the guys name Renaud .... while you guys formatted the server with client data.... luckily we take back ups on our own but the whole point was you reformatted the server which took 8 hrs when the whole promise was the hd swap since it was degrading... and I was simply given a reformatted server 0 data and to top it off new ips.... its obvious what you guys have done is going to trigger me to widely discuss the fail at I web.
