Do you expect email notification from your host for downtime or other major changes?
At some point, my host apparently decided to stop sending email notifications of any kind. Customers are expected to check the company's forums every day to see if there are any current or upcoming issues with the servers.
Do you expect email notification from your host for downtime or other major changes?
For example, if your domain's IP will change or the link to the control panel will change, do you expect email notification from your host of these events?

IP change, yes. Control Panel link change, maybe.
Anything that could cause an outage a host should contact there customers. Did they tell you that they were not sending email notifications anymore?iWebFusion.Net - Shared / Reseller / VPS / Bare Metal / Colocation / IP Transit / Networking

IP change or link change, yes - as that kind of thing its not exactly 'expected' or a regular occurrence.
Perhaps you could use an RSS feed to check for updates (if supported by the hosts forums)Last edited by SercoNetworks; 02-05-2011 at 08:15 AM. Reason: Changed wording; possibly could have been construed as self advertising

If nameservers, IP's, or changes to links that will directly impact myself and my service than I would like to know about them██ l Dedigeeks • Shared • Wordpress • Dedicated • Established 2006

Of course! It is the host's responsibility to notify about the changes. If a customer don't want to get annoyed with emails. He can opt to unsubscribe requesting them not to send.

I believe they should, also if they do, its a backup for the host if someone complains about the downtime. They can say "Well we emailed you in advance about the downtime, its your responsibility to check your emails".

If it's something major like an outage, yes I want to know about it. Minor things I'd rather not be bothered.

On planned maintenance or upcoming changes I think an email to all effected customers should be a requirement. Now if it is a small outage a forum or twitter post will do, unless it turns into something extended, then it would be necessary to send an email informing customers of the downtime and the step that are being taken to fix the issue.

Keeping your customers up to date is very important, personally I feel it's better to do too much, than not enough.

Keeping your customers updated in any kind of situation is always important. It's never too much, because if their service is down they want to know whats going on, especially if it's down for a long period of time.

I'd like to know when my services are down. It is never a good thing when I find out about downtime before my provider does.
Getting an email shows that they care and are aware of any issues.~ @PreetamJinka

email and SMS notification is good.
RSS feed sounds also good if a person knows how to look into it.

What if the hardware used on the billing system fails or if you keep WHMCS on the same server as your clients? How would you notify them?

I believe you have an option to subscribe to the hosting provider's forum so you should be able to receive email notifications when any announcements are posted. Most of the forum softwares should have this feature.

We expect all providers to give *advance* notice of *anything* affecting the network. The servers are our own responsibility. It takes only a few seconds to decide whether or not it is important.

Yes. I queried my host the other night to inquire as to why I couldn't login to my server for 2 days. After several emails back and forth, I was informed that my website had been moved to another server. When I asked why I didn't receive any notification of this prior or even during the process, I received the response below.
"We stopped sending email notifications for things like this long ago since most users just complained or ignored them. What you can do and what we suggest is register on our forums at [removed] and then just watch the forums for the machine(s) you're on."
