    Nameservers, BIND, etc.

    Hey All,

So today i've gone ahead and setup a VPS from scratch (lighttpd, PHP/MySQL, pop3/smtp/imap, ftp, etc.
However, i've now come to a bit of a pitfall...

I've gone ahead and setup my named configuration, however I now need to setup the nameservers which I can point my domain to.
I can access my domain via the IP address, but how would I go about setting up ns1.domain.com ns2.domain.com etc so that I am able to add them via my domain registrar? - Is this something the host would normally provide?

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Many Thanks.

Your registrar should provide a utility whereby you may configure your own nameservers.

Usually you just tell your registrar what the nameservers know themselves as (e.g. ns1.domain.tld), and the ip at which they may be reached; and when I say "tell them" I mean through their web-management utility -- you shouldn't have to open up a support ticket or anything. Make sure your nameservers know about themselves, too, by adding A records that point back to them.

    That's it . . . pretty easy

Thanks very much I wasn't barking up the wrong tree after all then - my registrar don't have the option to do that via their domain administration interface, only to set the nameservers (e.g. ns1.domain.com) so I'll get onto them about that via email.

Just to clarify, letting them know about themselves is something you have to do in the master zone file for your domain -- your registrar cannot help you with this if that's what you're stuck on.

Here's an excellent tutorial that will explain all aspects of managing your dns better than I will be able to:

Thanks for the link best explanation I've seen on the topic so far - looks like I have indeed setup everything correctly at my end.

There doesn't seem to be a consensus on how these are named by the different registrars. GoDaddy refers to them as hosts, whereas registrars using the logicboxes system refer to them as child nameservers. These are two I have direct experience with. Other registrars could call them something entirely different too.
