    Livezilla is remotely hosted.

    Edit: Wait do you mean not hosted by you? If so I don't know of any live chat services like that. Sorry.

    LiveZilla is self-hosted.

    Chat4Support is $6 a month if paid annually.

    Some companies are charging $50+ a month for live chat services. Someone somewhere must be paying that sort of money otherwise they wouldn't still be in business.

    I think what they mean is that the chat software is not hosted on their servers, but rather hosted by the chat company. Many chat companies offer this. The operators are the hosting companies employees, but the backend is hosted by the chat company.

    I like Provide Support as well but as of late I'm not a fan of the delay within chat sessions, not sure if it has to do with their servers etc. but it is extremely annoying when you have to wait for 15+ seconds to have your message displayed on the chat window.

    I would suggest not ever using such expensive paid services such as LiveResponse, ProvideSupport, and so many others.

    Here is a list containing the best - from a user and representative's perspective - free & paid live chat software.

    == FREE ==
    1.) LiveZilla is an excellent & FREE solution for providing instant live chat support on your website, with both web and desktop interfaces. It has sound notification for guests which means a lot for visitor-to-customer conversion.
    2.) 24im is my own preferred FREE live chat support solution for websites. It features an AWESOME interface for both visitors and representatives, and representatives may use the software via through their browser or through an awesome desktop application. Representatives may invite other reps into conversations as well as divide support into departments and actually hold conversations through customizable chat rooms as well, for both representatives [only] and/or guests to interact with other guests and/or other reps.

    == PAID ==
    1.) PHP Live! has to be the best paid live chat support solution simply because of their awesome interface, inexpensive pricing, and features. Unlike other paid live chat solutions - the ones that were not chosen to be on this list - PHP Live! offers unlimited operators and no other restrictions. The best thing about this software is that it plays a sound notification that's actually compatible with EVERY major browser (wow, for once) that notifies the visitor when a message is submitted by a rep. No more visitors disappearing or getting distracted and then booted for long inactivity. This feature alone can cause visitor-to-customer conversion a lot more easily and more statistically compared to other live chat software, which by the way, no other live chat software have the sound notification feature by default and that work across all browsers perfectly. Ding!
    2.) Star Develop is another excellent choice for live chat support software that has both an excellent interface for both staff & guests. Reps can choose the desktop client or through the browser to chat. One of the cool features about this software is that reps can put up away messages that will show in the image that you put on your site for rep status (online, away, offline). It's also inexpensive for the features and no restrictions (unlimited reps), but not as inexpensive as PHP Live! unfortunately, though this software is worth it, considering it's updated a LOT more frequently! Also has sound alerts!
    3.) Kayako LiveResponse is an awesome live chat software solution. It currently has a few problems that I've pointed out to the staff and reported for hopeful urgent fixing. It's inexpensive with no restrictions. You can also talk to the staff at the site - which by the way are ALWAYS available (the customer support is GREAT @ Kayako which makes this product able to rank at #1 or #2) and you can always talk them into giving you a 20% discount (I always try to get 25% off but never works, just scored a 20% off coupon code through their live chat support though). Sound alerts are coming soon by the way!

    Right now we use zopim . com. It is remote hosted and has limits until you start to pay but it works well.

    That may be good for very small companies, but anyone with multiple support/sales reps or tons of traffic would probably want a live chat.
