Cybersecurity Act of 2009
Apparently there's some new legislation brewing that would allow the federal government to take control of core internet components in the event of a national emergency.
I don't want to start a political debate here but I find this troubling since it doesn't require congressional approval.

This is the only organization that seems to be fighting this: http://www.chooseliberty.org/interne...er.aspx?pid=03

Regardless of who is trying to implement such a law (certainly, you could see Bush attempting the same?) I believe it's in our best interest to prevent such control.
The internet is, for the most part, truely free. Let's not screw this one up.

I hate to say it, but legalities and rights aside, do we really want the government to try to manage core infrastructure during an emergency? :p
Can anyone say "downtime"?

Oh that did make me laugh. Well done .
I read the PDF summary and it doesn't seem particularly bad in all honesty, although I think what's being forgotten or overlooked is that the US cannot have complete control over the internet, so their abilities/powers would still stop at the border, whereas internet threats do not.
The other problem I see is that it wants to make the profession of network hacking certified (I would assume akin to a doctor being certified?) I find that preposterous, who would sign up for that? Any true hacker would still want to maintain their anonymity or at least not be in a large database with all their details.

Eh in a way I guess it can be a good idea if they need to get something out to every quickly or something along those lines. But aside from that I'm a little skeptical about it....

Question is, when does the emergency end?

This legislation has been around for a while and we've discussed it here before. But this is the first time I remember hearing that this law does not require Congress to be involved. AFAIK, Congress = the Legislative Branch of government. Who else would create this new law?
I find it completely ironic that our government developed the Internet (Arpanet, via DARPA/DoD) in order to protect our communications, yet now the President wants the power to shut down our communications?
This is not a good thing at all....john2k...

When was the last time terrorists took out two 110-story buildings by crashing planes into it?
We should wait until it happens? Like waiting till hackers trigger a nuclear meltdown that could kill hundreds of thousands of people and radiate the area for hundreds of years?
Cyber-terrorism is a real threat.
