    A problem in installation VMWare.

    Hi all,

I tried to install a vmware on my server( Fedora 64bit ), but i got it.

    PHP Code:
None of the pre-built vmmon modules for VMware Server is suitable for your running kernel.  Do you want this program to try to build the vmmon module for your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)? [yesyes

    Using compiler
"/usr/bin/gcc". Use environment variable CC to override.
Your kernel was built with "gcc" version "4.4.0", while you are trying to use "/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.4.1"This configuration is not recommended and VMware Server may crash if you'll continue. Please try to use exactly same compiler as one used for building your kernel. Do you want to go with compiler "/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.4.1" anyway? [no] yes

What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include]

The header files in /usr/include are generally for C libraries, not for the running kernel. If you do not have kernel header files in your /usr/src directory, you probably do not have the kernel-source package installed. Are you sure that /usr/include contains the header files associated with your running kernel? [no] no
What i have to do now?

    uname -a
    Linux m5248 2.6.29.4-167.fc11.x86_64 #1 SMP Wed May 27 17:27:08 EDT 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

If you want VMWare server, I would use Centos 64 since it's more of an enterprise OS. Did you try yum -y update?

Most annoying problem with vmware is that it may not work with newly released kernel ( like kernels packaged with debian and fedora ). Upgrading fedora and debian, will most likely, break the vmware installation. And, you will be forced to use the previously running kernel. That is, you end up running a vulnerable kernel for the sake of vmware.

Do you have the matching kernel-headers package installed to match your running kernel?

Make sure that you have kernel-source,kernel-headers and kernel-devel packages installed that matching to your running kernel version.
