    * Linux Dedicated Server - Is it enough?

    Hey all ,

I am owener of a big site (max visits a day 100K)

I have my own Dedicated Server - I think he is strong enough ,

But in rush hours he carshed a lot and need to be restarted.

The server has WHM and Cpanel on it .

The server only running this site., mostly html based with little SQL.

This is the server info :

    (Dell PowerEdge PE1950)

The server should be able to handle more than 100K visits/day with mainly HTML and MySQL. What server side scripting language are you using (ex: PHP)? Also what does the server load look like (uptime; sar -q)?

Can you post the output of sar -q here and also a screen shot of top during high traffic periods?

Most of it is simple HTML.
sar-q will follow, is 375 Euro is a good price for this kind of server?

Those are OLD xeons. You are getting ripped off. Even 100 euro is too expensive. If you're renting it. If you're buying it out right, 200 euro is about a good price.

What bandwidth agreement do you have and what kind of management service are you getting?

    Full management.

  7. #7
Since it's full management why aren't you getting your host to diagnose the issue? The processors do seem quite old, to be honest.

First of all, that's no dedicated server. It's a VPS. Based on the SAR output you provided, the server peaks at 727 load average before it kneels down hard. That's big enough to kill a hefty dedicated server. Reduce your MPM prefork ServerLimit/MaxClients to a manageable number to stabilize the server. Once that's done, look into migrating to a leaner setup.

    Good luck

I would expect that there is probably a script on your website that is either:
    - really badly written
    - inefficient
    - being asked to do something crazy
    - exploited
    - being hit *tons*
    - or all of the above.

I think the plan for you should be to:

    1. Login via SSH and run "top" and watch it.
    2. Login to WHM and keep looking at the server status page.
    3. Wait for it to crash, and make a note of what you saw in top and the status page.
    4. Repeat until you see a pattern.

    Then post back here.

In cPanel, you can install Munin Service Monitor and watch it show you very important statistics.

You should discontinue whatever you have now and buy/rent a new server from a reputable company.

Check LeaseWeb.com - they have new offer running right now with loads of bandwidth!

How are you telling this? I'm not seeing this indicated.

To the original poster -- this whole request is strange. For one, you're way overpaying at 375 Euros a month. You're in the right place to find a new host, though.

You give very few details. Some things I'd like to know about your setup:

    - How much RAM do you have? (Can you run "free" in a terminal and paste the output?)

    - What do you have for disks? Can you paste the output of the "mount" command for starters, unless you know exactly what's in the machine?

    - I have never, ever encountered a Linux box that did not have the "top" command installed, be it a monster server or an embedded firewall. Could you paste the output of "top -bn1" (which will run it in "batch" mode one time, making it much easier to copy-and-paste).

    - You left out many details. What Linux distribution are you running? What are you using for a webserver -- I assume Apache as WHM/cPanel provided?

    - Do you use WHM/cPanel? It seems like overkill for a server hosting one site. I doubt that it's the cause of your problems, it's just odd to me.

    - You hint that SQL queries are being run, but never elaborated. I think it would be a big help to explore this area more, since it's a common bottleneck on sites. Specifically...

    - What is running the SQL? Are you using PHP or something like that? Is it a custom-written application, or an existing package like phpBB or something?

    - Do you run MySQL on this server? Have you tuned it at all? (You might want to install the "mytop" package, which would let you watch long-running queries.)

Sorry for all of the questions, but specifics will make it much, much easier for us to help you.

    Hi Fog,

Check out the uname -a from SAR:

    Linux 2.6.9-023stab048.4-smp (opvision.customer.attikh.net) 08/09/09
That's a Virtuozzo kernel. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

    That's correct as mentioned earlier.

This list is by no means an all-comprehensive list of honest providers . Perhaps Jacob's good list.

I'd like to have this answered too. I mean is there a chance its the host node for a viruozzo system? Some providers provision dedis with VPS host node kernels installed so that users can setup VPS easily.

It's very possible the providers installed Virtuozzo kernel on the hardware node to virtualize the machine then create one VPS with unlimited resources. That's nothing new but this is something that should have been explained to OP when purchasing the dedicated server.

We pose the question on each new server sign up too. The advantages being upgrades to new hardware platforms is done with a few clicks of a mouse and is zero downtime.

Yes, 100% sure. Ask your provider for access to the virtuozzo or Hypervm admin interface.

A quick addition. There's nothing wrong with virtualizing a server if the intent is to provide better service and ease the upgrade path. Just work with them to resolve your load issue.

Keep in mind that virtualization adds some overhead to system calls in general so performance is slightly less than what you'd get when running an OS on bare metal.
