    Post New VPS Idea

Hi I just thought of an new idea of vps hosting. Well it is smiler to dedicated server hosting. Ok so here it is.

I buy this kinda of server:
Quad Core 2.5Ghz (10 Ghz CPU Total)
    16GB RAM
    500GB HD

This is what a client gets:
2.5Ghz Cpu (One core their own.)
    3.5GB RAM
    100GB Space
    1000GB Bandwidth
    OpenVZ Control Panel
    1 Dedicated IP

    Addons:
    cPanel $15.00/month
    Plesk $15.00/month
    Ip $2.00/month

So this means there would be maximum 4 clients per server each having their own core and crazy amount of ram, huge 100GB disk space, on a 50Mbps or 100Mbps (matters if bought in 1st month or 4th month when I would start this hosting).

All for guess what $50.00 per month free setup and a 15 day money back. 24/7 free live and voice support.

So how does this sound to your guy's ears? Any good?

And also if the client wants plan 2, he/she can pay extra $50 which totals for $100 per month for:
    2.5Ghz Cpus (Dual Core)
    7GB RAM (CRAZY)
    200GB Space
    2000GB Bandwidth
    OpenVZ Control Panel
    2 Dedicated IP's

I really don't know too much on pricing VPSs but that sounds good I would buy that if I had enought money but right now I'm not looking for a 50 dollar vps.

The offer seems pretty good except:

it's only one HDD, so if that dies...
Out of my curiosity, if you only want to add 4 clients why won't you use Xen giving the amount of ram/VPS ? In this way you will have a better guarantee for your clients you won't oversell.

It's not a new idea. It's called a Hybrid VPS.. and you are better off with Xen.. and if nothing else, you should use Xen at least.

I still don't get what a hybrid VPS is.
Some people call Hybrid VPS a Virtuozzo VPS, others call their OpenVZ VPS a Hybrid, a.s.o.
They are just VPS servers, what is the catch ? (if there is any except marketing)
A hybrid between what and what ?

    I thinking about RAID 1.

And ok then Xen control panel.

Xen is a hypervisor, not a control panel. There doesn't seem to be anything special about the offer, just a lot of RAM for a single quad core.

Some call it a VDS (Virtual Dedicated Server).

Your idea runs along the same concept.

The hypervisor used does not technically determine if it is a Hybrid or not.

Hybrids are indeed nothing more that a super beefy VPS basically. The node is evenly split between X containers, providing more resources and a better overall experience.

The reason they are called Hybrids is because they are a hybrid between a VPS and a dedicated. Often times a well configured Hybrid will offer better performance than lower end dedicated servers.

so it's just a marketing thing like semi-dedicated and VDS and others. I wanted to see if there are other reasons.

As some people already said this is not a new idea and you should sit down and go through your business plan before starting it up. I have never been in the business myself but just do a google search and you'll see the competition your up against..

You must consider RAID-10 for such VPS ( Hybrid Server) . RAID-1 is worst than single drive as it can cause significant performance bottleneck for I/O intensive applications like mail server and others. For VPS RAID-10 is a must if you want to maintain performance. SATA drives are OK with RAID-10 and cost effective but SAS is preferred for more speed.

If you're happy with making $200/mo for a 8-core / 16GB node, then go for it. Personally, that's not anywhere near enough revenue for that type of machine.

EDIT: $200/mo revenue, not counting datacenter/bandwidth fees, virtualization costs, support, overhead, etc.

If you want to go with a plan like that you are going to need to get RAID 10 as most have said and you are going to have to bump your price per VPS because there is no way you are going to get a "good" RAID 10 server at < $200 / month. (If you are please tell us all where tho)
