Setting up a proxy server for dummy :)
Hey guys,
I want to set to set up a proxy site(like www.safelizard.com / www.hidemyass.com) but I'm kinda newbie in web hosting and stuff... So here are my questions
after I create my website...
*What host should I choose?(I've heard Bluehost and Godaddy are good but they don't allow proxy servers)
*why don't most hosts allow a proxy servers.... I mean I'm paying for the storage space and the bandwidth and they charge for the extra bandwidth usage...So what's up with that??
*How much would registering a domain name cost me and after registering a domain name do I have to pay a monthly fee to retain it or is it a one time fee?
*Who do I pay the money for registering the domain to... I read many hosts register a free domain for customers but do I get to keep it if I change the host??
*In case it's monthly fee what happens if I just decide to abandon the domain and don't pay the cost.. Would the domain be up for grabs again??
*How much would a hosting the site cost me per-month(Bluehost charges about $4/month but I'm guessing the site would act sluggish for that low cost).. Do I need a dedicated server or if not what plan would suit my needs.
*Is there any other way to monetize the site apart from adsense??.. I don't want to do anything illegal(at least not with my very first site )
*How much can I earn from it?
*Are there any legal issues with owning a proxy website??
*How much monthly bandwidth would I need for hosting a decent proxy site?

I'm guessing that may be to do with server resources and the potential to attract trouble.
I'd always pay for a domain seperate from the host, it wouldn't be the first time I've heard of hosts play hostage with customers domains.
I'm not a legal expert so I wouldn't be able to offer qualified advice, however I'm guessing a reasonable proportion of people use these types of services to view all sorts of nasty sites.
Ultimately you're the one who'll have to endure the potential legal minefield if they visit a kiddy porn site or to commit fraud.Last edited by SSHocker; 07-09-2009 at 07:24 PM.

I used to use IwhiC several months ago and found that they have pretty good support. I know that they have servers that are used specifically for proxy hosting.

information
Hey there, first of all, im not sure why they dont allow it but many providers do .. so just search around for proxy or http tunnel hosting, meantime the domains are registerd threw any domain name registra, for example godaddy.com or namecheap.com etc, and domains are paid for yearly, prices range from company to company!

Also pricing also depends on your hosting provider, you can check things out, maybe get some information from the host before going with them therefore you knwow things will be ok for your needs. but also yes there are free domains out there, or your hosting company may register one for you and include it in the fee charged to you for hosting, or as i do i register my domains seperatly threw a domain registra like godaddy or namecheap and then i get a hosting package threw a company, you then get nameservers that your provider gives you to aim your domain too, once done and hosting is setup you may edit website and so on. As for legal issues i would say as long as you still obey the normal state or country legal laws you will be fine, like if your setting up a proxy to constantly spam somewhere, a complaint can still be made and law can step in, but if your using it normally and not being abusive with it you should be fine. as for the bw needed, that can vary month to month, day to day etc, all depends how much you use it, where ya go with it, what ya do with it etc, speak to your possible hosting cmompany and explain what about you would need and im sure they will fill you in or help you out.

Can they legally do that?? I mean holding the domain hostage as you said..
IwhiC was pretty decent actually but Hagio-host seemed to provide better bandwidth for same cost. Are their any factors that make IwhiC better(like better servers/customer support etc..)
If prices for renting the domains vary through companies then why would anyone ever go to a costlier one as long it's just the matter of registering the domain.. Do they provide some better features?
I get it that bw usage varies but still I wanted an experienced opinion about the usage plan I should choose

TMZHost specializes in Proxy Hosting
Proxies eat a lot of CPU. Bandwidth cost money, if you go over your limit then they will obviously charge you for that. Proxy sites are usually used for scamming, even if the owner's intent is to offer a way for teenagers to bypass their schools rules, etc.
You pay yearly, namecheap has a deal for $8.81 per/year.
You would have to pay for the domain to be transferred to you. Sometimes, with kiddie hosts they will hold the domain hostage for a large sum of money. You usually have to pay a years worth of hosting for the free domains.
Yes, it would be up for grabs again(After the redemption periods and whatnot)
You don't necessary need a dedicated server, once your site gets big enough you would need one.
You won't earn a lot of money, it's not like you can live off of one site's earnings, unless of course your
I'm no legal expert, but I would believe so.
A few GB, then eventually a lot more.

90% of proxy sites are used for illegal purposes (IMHO)

There are some web proxy hosts out there who do in fact monitor the proxies to see what they're used for. They'll have servers and plans designed specifically for web based proxies running on scripts such as Glype or phpProxy. Your best bet is to look for a provider that offers proxy hosting plans and start from there.
