Go with the Nehalem, assuming it is two processors. We always prefer Xeon's over a desktop processor as they are designed to be pushed to the limits 24/7 without skipping a beat.

Nehalem is the codename for a line of Intel CPUs.

The i7 is the desktop version of the Nehalem and the E55xx is the server version of the Nehalem.

    i7-920

    E5504

Hopefully these pages will help to show you the difference between the two. Does the one server with the Xeon based processor come with one CPU or two CPUs?

that server is Single Processor Quad Core Xeon 5504 - 2.00GHz (Nehalem) - 4MB cache

The i7 920 will give you performance much better than the E5504 because:

-920 has hyperthreading, giving you 8 logical cores. 5504 doesn't, so you only get 4 cores.

-920 runs on a much higher frequency - 2.66 GHz vs. 2.00 GHz

    -920 has a much larger L3 cache - 8MB vs. 4MB

    -920 has a faster QPI interface: 6.4GT/s vs. 4.8GT/s

The 5504 is really a crippled version of Nehalem. The Xeon equivalent of i7 920 is E5550.

If you're getting a single socket server, there's no reason to get a 55xx processor instead of a i7 - it'll just cost more while offering lower performance

    bingo continuation

The Xeon equivalent of i7 920 is E5550.

I would also get the i7 when comparing 5504, and an i7.

If you decide on the I7 find out about the chassis you are going on since , while powerful, is still a desktop chip.

"Nehalem" does not necessarily mean it is better than the others (previous CPUs).

Its the new architecture, i7 is a desktop kind processor whereas the Xeon is a server processor.

We've run into problems with the Nehalem running RHEL 5.3. Depends on the OS you plan to put on it.

We ran into some instability under heavy IO and seemingly a bug with the L3 cache.

Red Hat stated they were working on the issues so we moved to OpenSolaris. After upgrading to OpenSolaris 2009.06 it is screaming.
