    KVM over IP

Hi, has anyone have experience using SecureLinx Spider?
    lantronix.com/it-management/kvm-over-ip/securelinx-spider.html

I'm interested in their Virtual Media support feature.

Does anyone know if I can re-install OS remotely with this?

I've gone through their manuals and the closest they covered was mounting as a virtual USB drive.

    Thanks for any help.

Yes, you can mount an iso and do a remote install with it. In fact, I'm doing that right now.

    They are great units.

Dougy, Are you doing this a Windows target. I have a suspicion that things like drive redirection and attaching to a share will work only if the target machine will be running windows.

We have these in our data center and you can certainly install an OS with them even if there is no OS on the machine or if your inside Linux. As long as the OS you are installing will recognize the virtual drive you should have no issue. I've done it personally with CentOS, Debian, Fedora, and Windows. FreeBSD tends to have issues detecting the drive but you can boot a FreeBSD ISO and then do a net install.

Mounting over a share can be done with a Windows or Linux share. I've done it with both as well. Doing the drive or ISO redirection from your local machine works great too. If you're not local to the server the install can take awhile but it still works.

Cool! Thanks guys! I had a feeling that you're able to do that. Needed confirmation.

Haha, it was the hosting company's technician that told me otherwise. Anyone heard of didedicated.com? Like their fast response though.

    Thanks again!

Yes, but it is extremely slow to re-install the OS remotely.

Think of your upload speed, and figure out how long it will take you to upload that iso? A longggg time!

If you needed do it really fast, you could connect to a windows server, connect to KVM and then install the OS from there, which would then be a lot faster!

Remote desktop to a windows box, grab an iso from MSDN or something, and KVM from there?

Haha, i dun really get the windows server to KVM part. Think i'll play with it when i get the server. Seems like many hosting companies don't set up servers during the weekend.

Oh, btw, what about drivers and stuff? Is reinstalling a server, same a reinstalling a normal computer at home? Or are there advanced configuration and stuff?

Reinstalling a server is pretty straightforward *IF* you have a common chipset that has support in the kernel, otherwise you're stuck building one.

It depends on what OS you're installing but in most cases you'll be just fine, Windows may need some drivers but Linux should be straight forward if you doing a minimal server install (no GUI)

Regarding the spider experience, I ran into connection issues with the spider virtual media on several occasions so i stopped using it but it's very good KVM overall.
