Great New Server!!
WOW - I just saw something really cool and had to share it with the WHT community ASAP.
I rarely create my own posts here, usually just chime into others and I rarely do that even. But today I saw something that was so innovative I wanted to share it.
I buy all of my hardware from Rob and Don over at RackMountSpecialists.com, and have done so for years. They always take really good care of me so I always recommend them to anywhere looking for a hardware vendor here.
They are actually local to me (Las Vegas, NV) so I usually pick any machines I order right at their shop and take them to the data center myself.
Well a few weeks ago I was talking to Rob about Atom machines, we have not sold any but I was thinking of starting to provide them as an entry level server. The thing I didn't like about the Atom idea was that I have to charge a lot less for them but they still take up the same amount of space in my racks. Rob hinted that he had something special in store for me but I didn't know what it was.
Well today I was there picking up some equipment I had recently ordered and Rob told me he had to show me something on the test bench. And VOILA there was the coolest most innovative thing I had seen in quite awhile (server wise)...something that I thought was unique enough to start this post.
It was their half server (what they are calling their Gemini Twin 1u). Now previously I have always disliked similar ideas because they were a 2-in-1 design (two servers in one chassis) which was an okay idea but to service one side you had to take the whole thing offline....which is not exactly what you want to always be doing.
Well over this Gemini server is actually in it's own independent chassis, and the chassis only takes up 1/2 of 1u. So in 1u you can put two machines, side-by-side! If you need to service one, you only need to take that side down as it is in it's own independent chassis.
Rob also hooked the machine up to the power meter for me and it was only pulling .28 amps, I didn't think it possible so he started running some benchmark software and at peak load it was only pulling .33 amps.
Anyways I was pretty stoked, I already ordered some of these suckers and can't wait to rack them up. I'll report back when I do....in the meantime I just thought it was so cool I wanted to share this innovation with everyone and at the same time give major Kudos to Rob and Don at Rackmount Specialists for understanding the needs of today's hosting industry.

I got that email from RS too, I'm pretty excited about the idea of having two physically separate servers in one U, hopefully I can find some customers that want some .

And about costwise? Is it more economical on the purchase cost?
I mean, you can build the same Atom platform with a MSI nettop chassis (around $180-190 with 2GB RAM), which is 2.6 x 9.4 x 11.8 inches (versus 8.75 x 16 x 1.75 of these gemini). Also, the geminis allow for 1x 3.5" HD only, while the MSI allows for 2 drives. In exchange, the MSI has no holes for putting in a PCI expansion card unless you drill the chassis.
In good calculations, you can put about the same number of both servers in a rack, having the MSIs standing in 4-5 levels of shelves in a 19" rack (23" preferred due to allowing a round number per shelf) so also serviceable individualy like a book.

Definitely a neat setup, wonder what the price tag is... sent in a Quote Request - will know soon enough.
They also have a 2x drive setup with 2.5" drives.

I wonder how they would mount within a rack enclosure?
Do they connect both halves to mount it or is the mounting different.

they do have rackmount bracket kit to joint the two half 1U's:

or just use these $15 mounting/jointing plates:

Now that is pretty cool. I might buy some for a proxy network I plan to open.

Hello,
Thanks Billy for the kind words. We are very excited about our product launch today - I told you to keep the cat in the bag on this one!!
Since everything is out now, I just thought I'd chime in and answer a few questions and concerns that have been raised in this thread and in my overflowing inbox this morning.
1 - We have a bracket kit available that allows you to mount a single unit in a rack. You can then easily remove the bracket without removing the existing server from the rack and install a second unit. In fact, in most threaded-hole racks, you can mount a single unit without the mounting kit if you want - they are light enough they just hang there off of a single rack ear without any problems.
2 - The bracket kit to secure 2 servers together is included with each chassis at no additional cost. It's a simple bracket that just mounts to the front of both side-by-side units.
3 - The PSU for our unit is completely internal - this is not anything like trying to stuff a bunch of nettops in a rack, or even the other 1/2 U chassis suggested above, which all use an external power brick of some kind. I can't even imagine the cable management nightmare that trying to do something like that would cause!
Our chassis is designed such that you will be able to put approx. 80 units in a standard 7' 2-post rack. We're also manufacturing PDU brackets and a few other other accessories necessary to support this type of build-out.
Feel free to hit me with any other questions you might have, and I'll continue to monitor this thread as well.
Thanks!

Yeah that is pretty cool but the problem is you can't buy that one It's a custom item that requires you to order a few thousand (only practical for a few).
You can buy one from Rackmount Specialists though so it is not conceptual like that one but a real product.
I can't wait to play with the ones I ordered.

Hi,
Unit = 1 Server
You'd need a pair of servers (2) in order to have them rack side-by-side, or you can order a single server and use our single server mounting bracket to rack it up until you need a second one.
Each half is a completely discrete, independent server, they can be completely different configurations. Hope this helps clear up any questions.
