Webhosts going unlimited
It seems there is a small surge that is rising with big hosting companies moving towards unlimited.
I think it started with Yahoo and now over the last few days I have noticed some other companies listed below going unlimited on space/bandwidth.
Hostmonster
IXwebhosting
startlogic
With this in mind, I suspect many others will start to follow. We shall see in the coming months.0

There is no such thing.
There is always a limit and I am sure they have a policy on this.

Everything has a limit, but instead of the ridiculous offers I prefer they just go unlimited. That's where the industry is headed, soon all the major oversellers will be doing unlimited.

It's hard to know and sometimes a risk when you aren't promised a limit, assuming you meet the terms of conditions of the hosting company. Of course, if they're going to post a ridiculously high and impossibly high number anyway, it really doesn't make a difference. What it will always come down to, is how much they'll allow you to use before you're suspended. Maybe it's a decent amount, and maybe it's a lot, and maybe (often enough) it's not evena reasonable amount (this can be due to the overall usage of all the accounts on the server, or it could be due to too many accounts on the server, or any number of things. Sometimes you can use a good amount if you're one of the first few on the server and then your usage limit decreases and the load can often increase). It's safer/better to use a host that has some sane limit that they can promise you and ensure you get, which should be generous enough and more than most people will need on a shared host anyway, but no one's stopping anyone from using an unlimited host, so good luck. I don't think any smart host will be going unlimited (I won't get into all of the reasons why), but remember that unlimited can mean several things, so ask the provider. In the meantime, I doubt many will go that route that haven't already. This has been an ongoing topic, for years, and is by no means recent. Many massive oversellers that already had impossible limit numbers were also already going to the unlimited claim over the last couple of years. There's no big change coming.

I think it is impossible to provide customers with the unlimited ammounts of space or bandwidth. It is just a good way to attract customer's attention!

There's no big change coming.
The underlying issue that remains though, is for customers to get their $5-$10 worth of service.0

Ya know what I've been telling this to people on ebay and other sites there are so many people that won't listen.. Go in the reseller account or your account look at server specs you will see a limit on the HD.. This is the dumbest thing ever to make people think that have it when they really don't.. I'm selling stuff on ebay and people won't buy because its not "unlimited" its a shame that people wont listen and they are buying stuff thats false

I don't see a difference between 1.5TB and unlimited.
It is just not realistic (at least to me )

While I don't think we will see the unlimited accounts mentioned at the start of this thread, i do think that the providers might allow it for non-commercial purposes and in a non commercail environment it might not really be a major concern considering the client base they are spreading it across.

Why? Do you assume they are less intelligent than you are?
That would seem to be what people around here think. "I'm smart enough to see that this is untenable, but my customers are not. Someone needs to protect them!"
It's disingenuous, elitist and frankly, just plain insulting to the consumers you all claim to hold in such high regard and care so deeply about.datapimp - You only get one soul, ya dig?0

No one is saying that they're smarter than the typical customer. But many people who do sign up for these plans don't realize the costs of space and bandwidth, nor do they know the technical details of their site. I'm sure you can go and ask them if you don't believe that is the case.
It's no coincidence that as consumers get more experienced, they tend to move towards the non-overselling providers rather than vice-versa.0

Being naive [having or showing a lack of experience, judgment, or information] does not mean one is also unintelligent. There are those who would actually take "unlimited" literally.
Who would protect all those customers from being dropped like a bad habit because they were using more than their "share" of resources? Are these hosts touting unlimited CPU usage?
To me, touting unlimited shared hosting is a gimmick. Its no different than a pandering politician. I would not offer unlimited shared hosting - its irresponsible [IMHO].

I wish companies would stop using the word, "unlimited." They know that they can't provide their clients with what they are offering - they are simply in it for the money. I would much rather have 10GB storage for $12.00 opposed to unlimited storage for $0.50.

What should they use? 10 TB space? That is more misleading than unlimited.
It's like giving 1 year free gas. That's considered unlimited. But if you give 10000 gallons of gas the person getting it would actually think he would get it (until he reads the smallprint, in our case the tos)Cheapest Multiple C Class IP Hosting0

Quantity over Quality seems to be the name of the game with some hosting companies. I guess that's what happens when you are trying to be the biggest instead of trying to be [at least] one of the best.

Great point. This point is also valid for spammers. If SPAM didn't make people money, you'd not a spam issue since the early 90s. As long as people buy it, and as long as there is a market for something (realistic or not), there will be those companies that will take advantage of that fact and market it. It is unfortunate, but it is a fact and while some hosts may stop offering it, or start offering it, but it's not ever going away. In the meantime, I don't think there will be any big shift or trend beyond what we've already been seeing the last several years and there will always be hosts that offer it and hosts that won't. I'm happy to see most won't resort to that claim, but it's only up to the clients if it matters. I figure let them be the judge of it. When it doesn't meet their expectations, they'll move to someone else, and after so many disappointments, they will chose a better host -- unless the host does satisfy them, and then it shouldn't matter.
