What kind of suggestions are you looking for? For server config or for the company?

Well.... But you still consider them. I little bit confused with your questions

Yeah, if you have come across many bad reviews then why are you still interested? I am sure you can find a similar deal with some other provider, who you think is good..

This thread sounds more like a way to trash FDC than find a host..

FDC has been good for us, they have fast support and we haven't ran into many issues when hosting with them.

Midphase seems to have a good deal there too though, a faster processor and dual hard drives but only 2GB of RAM, how much would it be to up that to 8GB or however much RAM you think you need?

    Desilime,

There are definitely a good number of Chicago-based dedicated hosting providers available out there! Check over the Hosting Offers section, I'm sure you'll find some with extended bandwidth and solid hardware for the service you're looking for.

Fdc has been very good for my needs. We're able to use alot of what they promise. My server has only been down for 10 minutes since having it ever. Medialayers server program looks very promising. 10tb of bandwidth for every server fully managed. To me thats a heck of a deal.

For me i prefer fdc. Im 45 minutes from chicago so upload speeds are very good. I just wish they werent running out of space or i would put an order in for a minimum of 3 more servers of my current config.

If MidPhase indeed uses the full Softlayer network I would go for them. The fact that they do not offer 'unmetered' almost guarantees better speeds. Plus their transit links are simply better.

MidPhase resells from SL with 10TB of bandwidth. It's already ALOT of bandwidth as compared to the 2TB of bandwidth you will get if you go straight to SL.

    so get from midphase! =p

Where are people getting reviews saying FDC is awful?

I haven't seen a bad FDC review that hasn't been resolved in months, FDC is one of the best hosts around.

use the search feature and you`ll find plenty :-)

one thing to keep in mind though is that every datacenter that has at least few thousands servers will have some negative reviews. It`s nearly impossible to keep everyone %100 happy in this industry

FDC is good for their tech support. However, the only not so good point is their network. They might have 101GBps of network but having mass quantity is not as good as having good quality with slightly lower quantity. Imagine FDC has 101GBps of AT&T and Internap and selling with its current low price, then everyone will hop over!

I would disagree with that comment and most of our customers probably too. FDC was always about bandwidth quantity over bandwidth quality. But even though that was/is our main goal we still kept improving bandwidth quality too over the years. The biggest improvement for our network was dumping Cogent in 2007 and replacing it with several network carriers which increased the network performance and uptime through the roof

Not to mentioned we added Internap in 2007 for those who prefer quality over quantity

Again that was never FDC`s business model. If you need slightly lower quantity there are plenty other datacenters that already offer that

    Couple problems with that scenario.
    - By reducing the number of upstream networks you reduce your redundancy and capability to handle DOS
    - even though ATT and Internap are available at Cogent like pricing (with proper commit) and lets say you buy 100Gbps worth of bandwidth from those 2 networks, you`d be able to buy 200Gbps for the same price from lower grade carriers. With FDC business model you`ll want to go with 200Gbps
