    Incompetence... Web Hosting.

All the time we are hearing about fly-by-night hosts that are there one day and gone the next. Ones that start up at the beginning of summer and shut down without notice at the end.

Sorry, I had to vent - it's "startups" like this that give all of hosting a bad name, in my opinion. I don't see why people start a company if they are not able/competent to run the business. I can understand if the business goes bust and has to close down, but shutting down without notice due to school starting or because they don't feel like running it anymore.

Sorry, I just felt the need to vent.

Low barriers to entry attract all sorts and it's hard for clients to differentiate the good from the bad - unless they hang out at WHT.

I see that your domain mddhosting.com was registered just 3 months ago. I wish you well and success in both your startup phase and the long haul.

Yeah, Back in 97 I wanted so badly to get a few servers, the correct licenses and start selling web hosting but work + family were taking too much time for it to be viable.

But I had to vent somewhere, I figured the lounge was the best place to do so.

It's a common vent in these parts.

I look at it the opposite. Its crappy, fly by night, bottom of the barrel, kiddie hosts that make us look even more amazing than we already are.

I believe it has a lot to do with the fact that web hosting looks easy. Than people realize the amount of work involved for such little profit, and just give up due to improper planning.

Everyone starts up to win the race, some fail and some succeed. Its all business and kiddy hosts can be called those who sell everything for nothing finally in pockets.

I actually did consider doing a test a couple of years ago. I was going to offer insanely cheap oversold packages with zero support for anything other than server outages. I still may do that, but I'd want to distance my good name from it...yikes!

Your can easily tell when a host is here to stay long or is a FBN (Fly by night).

I always see the domain registration and packages with UNLIMITED in bold *hint* *hint* .

99.99999999999999% of the kiddie hosts dont realize that there is no such thing as unlimited. And especially if you see something starting close to summer, those are the ones you definitely want to avoid until after summer ends. I mean c'mon, there are a lot better long term hosts out there.

Although it is surprising how many long term hosts have ridiculous unlimited packages.

Thats incompetence by Users/Clients as well, not just by Web-Hosts. Mostly clients jump unto very cheap and as you mentioned unlimited offering hosts while ignoring why such big companies are not offering unlimited ones.

One question which was from my to-be-client was! why I do not sell packages like Go-Daddy and 1and1. Although bit of odd, I just told him fairly! those are giants and I am not, as I cannot afford that much space with optimum performance.
He has been my customer since than.

I agree with AH-Tina, you have to be optimistic about business. If your a pessimist... might as well close down your business now.

There has always been.. there is now.. and will always be "fly by night" cheap web hosting providers. We have all been dealing with those since way back to mid-90's.. its not new.

But you need to focus on the positive... and invite those customers to you. I know your just venting, but really any pessimistic feelings will only hurt your business. Use that energy and go out and advertise your butt off!

If a person is charing $0.99/mo for "unlimited" bandwidth/diskspace.. do you honestly want that customer? I'd rather get a solid customer at $10/mo who wants good support... who will be happy and refer you customers. Forget the $0.99/mo customer... IMHO its a waste of time. Working hard to get 100 $0.99/mo customer is only $100/mo. That is peanuts.. really worth it?

Incompetence just isn't a fly by night thing, even hosts that have been around for awhile are ripe with it but somehow survive but newbies not doing their homework and being attracted by low pricing.

In regard to flybynighthost.com, give us an update once you get something going.

BTW: I picked up unhappyhosting.com to create a spoof site about the hosting oversellers. I'll add this item to my many half finished project list.

LOL. What's funny is I'm doing the exact same thing. Adding to my list of projects, which are all half-finished.

I'll give you an update. I've wanted to do a spoof on unlimited hosting for some time now.

Haha I had no idea my rant would bring this many responses. What would be interesting is a template'd web host with unlimited everything for $1.00/month, then when they try to order, something like "Get a real host, there is no such thing as Unlimted Hosting"

    lol
