how does this server compare with my old one?
I am in the process of looking for a new hosting company that has good ddos solutions.
My current server is:
Code:Intel Dual - Quad-Core Xeon E5320 / 1.86GHz - 8MB cache 2 x 143GB SAS 15k RPM drives - 3ware RAID1 - 8GB ram
Code:System: Supermicro™ Dual Socket 771 CPU: Intel™ Xeon E5405 Harpertown 2.0GHz 1333FSB 12MB CACHE Memory: 8GB FSB667 FBDIMM Hard Drive: (2)15K RPM SAS w/3WARE RAID1 Bandwidth: 2000GB/MONTH IP Addresses: 5 Port: 10/100MBPS SWITCHED VLAN Management: FULLY MANAGED DDOS Protection: TOP LAYER NETWORKS™
So that new server that burstnet is offering me with my LiteSpeed webserver and a good software firewall and it all optimised, do you feel I will be in good hands, and a good set-up to withstand a heavy or a good ddos attack?
What are you thoughts?

LiteSpeed webserver and a good software firewall won't help much when a real ddos attack comes. I would suggest you get a server from awknet if you need good ddos protection.

Even tho they offer: TOP LAYER NETWORKS™ protection? do you still feel they will crumble?

Im confused. The title of your message is; how does this server compare with my old one? but your asking about DOS protection?

yeah maybe a confusing title ^^ I want to compare servers as I will be moving servers, but the reason i am moving is because of ddos problems, so I need to ensure that burstnet will be suitable in that regards.
ps. I am still waiting back for a quote from AWKNET (they have been replying to me which is good, so that should be with me tomorrow).
however I didnt get one back from gigiservers or whatever the name is. and I didnt get one back from another company which is supposedly good. Sent them all emails/tickets 4 days ago, I feel that is sufficient time to make up my mind.
So now it looks like burstnet may be suitable with there top layer protection, but im not feeling confident now as no one else is supporting them. I'll wait to see what AWKNET offers me tonight or tomorrow when they get back to me, and I will just hope it is affordable in my budget.

If you are expecting heavy ddos, then go for gigenet or staminus.
But if it is just a minor ddos, then burst is fine although we didn't test Burst for heavy ddos so we can't also say if it can handle or not.

gigenet said they do not do dedicated servers only proxy server on your server, they said to me you need to contact gigiservers which I did 4 days ago and never got a reply. so not sure if something had gone wrong with the communication on my or there side, but maybe I will try again 1 last time to get a response.
As for Staminus, is blacklotus and staminus the same company? If so I am currently using one of there reverse ddos proxy protection products, which works okay, but I want it to be invisible not for users to have to click on a message every time they come to the site. As for getting a server through them, they offered me the best server they have, and it did not compare to anything like above, it was really a low end server compared to what I am using currently, so that is a reason why I did not go with them.
Let me know if I am mistaken, thanks.

still finding it so hard to choose, I wish awknet would get back to me quicker so i can compare them better.
Anyway, for now, how do both servers compare? are they about equal or is one a lot better then the other in the first post?

WOW I finally got a reply from AWKNET and this is what it said:
Raw price on this hardware is apparently in the "2k" ballpark. This is
something we wouldn't be doing at this time without a $1.5k setup fee.
So many people recommended them. What are you guys getting and for what price?

We're getting some of these systems in this week, and they're also going to be in the $400 to $700 price range as well including bandwidth, but no management. So that ballpark sounds about right.

I'm pretty sure that isn't the monthly cost. It looks like they quoted you the value of the system and a set charge if you want that custom built. You might want to double check with them.

yeah there has been some confusion. (probably both ways tho lol) I guess when I asked them to confirm the price, there reply of just "yep" made it seem that way as my reply to them was
....I cant see it being that expensive per month, every where else does this hardware between $400 and $700 a month. Are you sure thats right?
"yep"
either way, confusion occurs simply over the net lol, the funny thing is, I am still confused ( I feel quite stupid right now ) so I am replying to the ticket again hopefully this time I will be given some more specifics so I am not missing the essential info.
I guess if they reply tonight, I may be able to make up my mind, I was actually really close to going with Burstnet but there set-up fee throws me off as I will be a long term customer with who ever I choose (I have been with my current host for over 2 years, I am only changing because I need the ddos protection which they can no longer provide me)
I am keeping an open mind for now.

pay some setup fee to get low monthly fee is a good idea if you planning to stay with the provider for a long time, that's what I did when I got a server from Justin.

did you buy the server from Justin or did you rent it from him? I am interested in going with awknet but I am just a little worried about the collocation. I live in Australia and if anything goes wrong with the server hardware, I am worried about downtime, how the hardware will be replaced, who replaces it, who deals with that etc. Just so many different things to think about, I wish I could just talk 1 on 1 with Justin for 10 mins and get everything out of my head so I am not feeling uncertain before out laying over $2000

I rent the server, I was planning to use the server for at least a year, so I paid $500 setup fee and get a Q6600 server for $129/m, If anything wrong, Justin will fix it. for colocation, it will be much more expensive and have to worry about hardware replacement. Justin is pretty fast on replying emails, you don't get answers fast enough probably is because too many timezones between you guys.

i'd go with renting it, but the set up fee will be $1500 so i might as well just spend another $500 to own the server from them. the only concern with owning it tho is the hardware and looking after it etc. if anyone has experience with collocation and what the steps to take are when there is a problem with a hardware item, then that would be great. thanks.

If you really want it to be invisible you should have made that clear. I'm putting in the ticket for it now.
In previous discussions we continued to reccomend that you stay with the security intercept screen for your own protection as it would provide better performance in trapping zombies. This is not to say we can't make it transparent.
Your current service on a transparent proxy will continue to provide exceptional performance over dedicated server providers with basic firewall services. Simply owning one of these devices is not impressive in itself.
.. and no, we're not Staminus we merely use them as one of our hosting networks.Last edited by ddosguru; 03-16-2008 at 06:00 PM. Reason: Elaboration

Transparency added. Please open a ticket at https://support.blacklotus.net if you have any other concerns.

Well I am glad I now have transparency, but I still have the concern that every visitor that comes to my site has the same IP address. Makes it hard to run a vbulletin forum when you have everyone on the same IP, you can no longer IP ban members, it throws off the whos online mod, the attempted password has to be disabled otherwise everyone is not able to login for 15 minutes and the list goes on.
I feel I have no option but to find a better network (also because i am running several other sites that are not behind protection, if they become targeted in the future, I will be back to where I started and I cant afford another layer of protection for each site individually.
I am not rushing into things, but I am looking for my best option for the long run, and I do not feel I have found it just yet, so I am keeping my mind open.
