Asteroid to miss Mars, may hit Earth

Asteroid to miss Mars, may hit Earth

WASHINGTON: An asteroid that has a one in 20 chance of striking Mars on January 30, might just fly past, which would probably make it target Earth at some point in future.

Designated 2007 WD5, the 160-foot wide asteroid was originally identified as a possible risk to Earth, though later analysis showed that it actually might be on a collision course with Mars.

    Thats going to be cool.

I am sure the scientists would have set a plan of destroying it before it hits out earth. If they fail, yes there is one man to protect you all. None other - the SuperMan Biju

160 ft. wide asteroid would make a humongous crater in Earth and would shake up miles and miles in radius if it was to hit Earth.

But yeah, it probably will miss both Mars and Earth.

Isn't this the same asteroid that had a 1 in 70 chance to hit mars a week ago?

if.....it was to head directly on a collision course with the earth, then no doubt the atmosphere would burn it up into relatively insignificant small chunks of rock. Having said that though, I don't fancy getting hit on the head with a rock flying at 500mps+.

Yes, the probability increased earlier this week I think it was.

If it misses Mars and there's a 1 in 20 chance of it hitting us cannot we just send a nuke at it? Easy and removes the risk.

nukeing it may not be the answer. Why not send a group of people to the it and let them set a bomb in its core. though they probably won't be coming back alive.

The problem with hitting it with a warhead would be it could break up and create more potential targets for hitting earth. The goal of sending a nuke would be to redirect the asteroid so it misses the earth.

This is an asteroid we need to be worried about. It definitely won't hit for a while but if it did hit it could certainly destroy the earth easily.

smaller chunks though that should burn up in the atmosphere.

Well hopefully but if you are dealing with an asteroid nearly a mile long (the one I refer to above) you may not be so lucky. I'm not sure why anyone would take the chance.

Just to compare, this is what 80 ft. asteroid did, now this upcoming one is supposedly twice its size.
