Just got the most random email ever.

I don't want to expose the professor or college because that would just be downright rude, but it was so strange I had to share

    Hello Jason Dean,
I hope this e-mail will still find you. If you do not remember I was your Web Dev 1 Professor. During your online class I had a family emergency but, I know that while I was gone you stepped up and taught every the material on the Syllabus. My absence last for 4 weeks an during that time you taught not online what was in the book but also gave out and used w3c compliant coding.

I have two classes now and I was wondering if you could help on my second class. Half of the class understands but I have my share of struggling students. My hopes were for you to help take charge of the students with the lowest grades and help them learn the basics and get them up to speed.
    Think on it! Regards,
    Web Dev Professor
Now I've emailed and left voicemail with 5 of my Comp Sci teachers who called me their Golden Child. Not one single time did I get a response from any of them. Now this shows up asking me for help? What would you do if teachers ignored your requests for Letter of Recommendations to get into a Uni only a yer later finding this in our inbox? I'm not inflating my ego, my VB.Net teacher said to me in front of my entire class that out of all his students except me were stupid and for me to avoid class as not to catch it. I just showed up every two weeks with lab work done and basically dropped it off. My Java teacher used me to debug other student's coding. My C++ teacher (who was the same as my VB.Net class) didn't even check my coding. My friend and I made sure it had a problem but I still got an A on everything.

Right now I'm confused, a little hurt by their silence, and my Web Dev Professor gave us no word that he was gone. After seeing a question on the class forum sit for a week I began to answer them all for the class. Wrote a big guide for them on compliant coding and went a little above and beyond even what my teacher was going to teach. So, think for me on this one cause it has my mind blown. I have no idea what to say or why he would track me down to ask this. I poured over the headers but they were clean, it was said Professor.

Help anyone? I made it into a poll to make it easier to answer for a yes and no.

Tell him kindly, that you are willing to help but not for free

If not for pay at least for a) a letter of reference and b) listing your prof as a reference on your resume as a teaching assistant for 'x' amount of hours.

Nothing wrong in helping without getting paid. In addition, the long term benefits can be very good too.

    This

Speaking from experience, going above and beyond is well worth it.

In many cases, your teachers and professors at university/college will be teaching the leaders of tomorrow - nothing wrong with making sure you stand out from the crowd, never know when that will be useful in your later life.

Given the past, I'd be reluctant to assist, unless you can strike a deal for what you wanted earlier, in exchange for helping him now.

I would offer to help but at consultant fee pricing. Or maybe you could offer to tutor the slower students. Definitely get a contract signed for this though.

I am a bit puzzled. Did this particular teacher snub you concerning the letter of recommendation?

If so, that is one thing. If not, please do not hold his co-workers' (fellow teachers') actions against him!

    (I'm a teacher myself.)

At first, you need their help but no one did even bother to help you.

I am sure the recommendation you asked is important for you but they didn't bother right?

Sometimes, they need to learn a lesson that they will not do this to anybody again.

If I were you, I will say, if only you replied to my request before, I can help you for free but since you didn't reply to my request, I will have to charge you.

    Fair for both :-)

Would helping him help you? Probably. Should you ask for compensation? If not financially, then certainly some recognition or letter of reference. All depends if you have the time and desire.

I help teach human anatomy and physiology at my university...including cadaver dissection. It is so rewarding to get to work with students, especially those that are struggling. My class is a class of 250+ so it is definitely nice for the professor to have some assistance. Highly recommend that you consider taking him up on his offer. I am paid to do it, so you definitely should be as well. Not to mention, definitely something you can put on a resume.

I agree with some of the others, I think you offer to help but make sure it’s clear you are expecting some form of compensation (the type of which is up to you).

    * Held my ground.

I did ask him for a recommendation because I thought he of all people should of been happy to do it. I asked all my Comp Sci professors except Paul Silberquit. I was sent to Paul's class by mistake, it was really a class on how to turn on a computer and work with Office programs. My final exam had a screenshot of word running on win95 with arrows pointing to different things (e.g. Start Button, the File Menu, and my favorite, The System Clock) asking what they were.

I complained about 4 days in but the administrator I had setup my schedule locked me and another programmer into Computers 101. Anyway, back on topic. I had indeed asked him for one, even included a line in all my emails stating my name, student id, and that I gave them full permission to contact me. I guess he just decided since I had tried with everyone and no one sent me anything nor did they send the school anything itself, he didn't need to but asking for my help was just fine? I read over this topic and I finally replied with a nicely worded decline on the grounds that no one could help me when I really could have used these letters, I couldn't find the time now to teach his class. I polished that up a bit to remove sarcastic remarks or phrasing and provided some fluff around it.

Thank you to everyone, you guys gave me more then just an insulted and angry ex-student's point of view. I was given a few angles to look at it from and I think I made the right choice. I feel the need to break out this again:
