www vs. public_html
Well, it depends on your control panel
For Plesk is probably /httpdocs
For cPanel probably: /public_html
Now: www vs. public_html
cPanel, has /www as well because it happens that FrontPage users are used to /www and other users are familar to /public_html, anyway it seems like they don't use double diskspaces as far as I know, they just point to the same place.
Regards.

You might come across /www if you enable FrontPage Extensions. But as I said before: they point to the same place.

YOu need tp place them into the domain root folder.. According to the control panel and server these are the various types
public_html,www, wwwroot,httpdocs, hshome/username/domainname/
If it is not useful let us know the details of it..,
