FYI there are plans to convert all the hosts to be full hardware RAID over the next few months ."

    1) My question is, If I order today, will I be on RAID-10 or maybe RAID-5 ?

    2) Also, from your website Order Form:

"This form is protected by 256-bit SSL encryption."

    Um, I don't think sooooooo:

    3) Also, I do not see on the Order Form where I can select additional options, as in, control panel ?

    Thanks

    1) That server in reference is about 1 1/2 years old. We've standardized on a hardware RAID Controller now and yes if you sign up you will be on a RAID-10 array.
    2) It appears the un-managed links were not set to https. You can use https://www.tektonic.net/order.php?op=unmanaged_plans
    3) For the un-managed plans you must order the base plan and then e-mail sales@tektonic.net with any additions for the moment.

Un-managed means we give you access to the server and support ends there. We will handle problems with the host server/network that is out of your control.

Fully managed means we will provide full support to you, perform security updates, install software, repair hacked servers. Essentially with a managed plan you can consider our support staff to be your tier 3 support.

    Hi Matt,

I've been looking at different VPS offers, and this looks very interesting.

Do you have plan to offer something similar in Xen (with unixshell.com)?

unixshell.com also has 50% off for first month. It states this on every page of www.unixshell.com. I do not know how long it will last yet.

    Thanks for the info.
But I was talking about the general specs of the plans.

    "IM1" $15 RAM=256M/DISK=10GB/BW=160GB Virtuozzo
    https://www.tektonic.net/vds.php?op=budget_plans

    "The 64" $14.99 RAM=64MB/DISK=6GB/BW=64GB Xen
    http://www.unixshell.com/index.php?page=services

When I compare, "IM1" has a lot more of everything.
"The 64" seems to be too low (even with the advantage of Xen) for the same price.
I mean, "IM" series look very attractive.

So, I was wondering if you have a plan to offer better deal in unixshell.com division.
(I think I've read the mention of Xen(unixshell.com) customer using more resources than the tektonic users, though ...)

It's 2 different technologies, difficult to compare and contrast.

The "UM" plans at TekTonic are based on Virtuozzo. Therefore you get the Virtuozzo Power Panel, shared kernel, limited functionality (no kernel modules, 2.6 kernel, etc), daily backups, but Virtuozzo is more resource efficient and designed to be oversold so the resources can be higher.

unixshell# uses Xen which is impossible to oversell resources by even 1 kilobyte on. It also has the Teknic control panel that not only lets you reinstall via the web, but also change your distribution as often as you like, access the "server console" via special ssh port, boot into single user mode, select your filesystem type (ext3, reiser, etc). We really are offering as low a price as possible on this service and still make a profit, those that try to undercut us will without doubt lose money and flounder. Do the math, Xen is limited to using 4GB of RAM, minus 256MB for Xen/host overhead for 3840MB of sellable RAM. At 128MB each VM that is 30 VM's sold. If the VM's are only sold for $20/mo that is only $600 revenue made off of the server. I don't know about anyone else, but $600 revenue does not make profit when paying for a server with 4GB RAM let alone one with multiple processors, hardware hotswap RAID, etc. In short, if you're looking for a Xen provider that will be around in a few months, look for those that charge equal to or higher than unixshell#.

As a consumer you need to decide on which features and resources are important to you. If both brands offered an identical service it would not make sense for both to exist.

Thank you for the clear explanation.

I'll think about the obvious advantage of Xen,
as far as fatures and security goes,
    vs. economical advantage of Virtuozzo.

I would appreciate if you can provide rough idea about the plans
that correspond to "IM1" (performance wise) in the unixshell.com side.

If the cost of Xen is too high, I may settle with Virtuozzo,
as I don't think I need kernel related features.

I'm also studying FreeBSD Jail based plans.
I'd be happy to listen if you have soemthing to say about FreeBSD Jail.

    Thank you, again.
I found many of your posts here to be very helpful.

If you don't immediately look at unixshell# and your mouth waters you're probably better with Virtuozzo. It sounds like you don't need the extra features of Teknic and a UM1 plan will provide more resources.

As are as jail, it has a lot of limitations... we do love FreeBSD, i think actually two of the support staff run it as their desktop systems. We will be doing FreeBSD/NetBSD as soon as possible under unixshell.com. Virtuozzo is not expected to re-release a FreeBSD version (they used to have one, but not enough demand).

I didn't know VZ had FreeBSD vresion.

Maybe I'll try out both Xen and VZ for a few months to see what I prefer
    when I finish current project.
