how to know where a site is hosted?
hi,
sometimes I'd like to know where a specific site is hosted,
any tool to know that?
I'd like to know where the following sites are hosted:
inhabitat.com
designyoutrust.com
core77.com
yankodesign.com
I know I could send an e-mail to the webmasters...
but I'd prefer to know if this info is somewhere available before bothering someone.
I tried to see the whois info,
but I don't know how to read the info.
for example: http://who.is/whois/core77.com/
tells me that is registered with networksolutions,
and the DNS is ns15.worldnic.com
so, where is the site hosted?
is there a way to know if a site is hosted in a Shared / Virtual Dedicated / or Dedicated?
thanks!

*.worldnic.com belongs to networksolutions.. What about doing a IP whois and look at what network it's hosted on?

As for if it's shared / vps / dedicated.. Not any way I know of. Sorry.

Use http://whois.domaintools.com. You can search who the IP is registered to.

I think this might be of a little help, but not sure about the results. Works for some domains though.

I have the Netcraft toolbar installed in Firefox. It shows me information about every site that I visit. I can see the host, site ranking and how long the site has existed and a lot more options exist.

I think a traceroute can help more than others in some cases.

This is genius! I bookmarked that website for future reference. What you can do to tell the difference if its shared or dedicated or maybe even VPS is you can see who else is on that server. I forget the website but basically you just check what other websites use your IP. If its a lot then its probably shared.

Check if the nameservers are visible on whois.sc . Then search for them on google.

Try domaintools it may tell you how many sites are sharing the same IP, if there are multiple sites sharing the same IP then it must the shared hosting. I think now most of features of domaintools are viewable for premium domaintools member i suppose. not sure exactly check it out.
If you what to check about the host (service provider) then you must go by finding the nameservers and try whois on the nameservers.

I got all excited when I saw this. I've recently been doing just this sort of research for several hosts I track at work. I thought it would save me a bunch of time. (research documented at jspjavaservlethosting.com)
It failed for 5/6 of them before I quit trying. Suxxxx.
I've been getting most of my data from whois. First I lookup the IP of the website, then I use whois to see who owns the IP.

if you can't see something after the whois lookup you can look who bought the ip range.
