You're going to need a better server. What price did you find that i5 for? You can probably find a better processor/RAM/etc for not much more.

@serverssupport: It is a dedicated server i plan to buy from singleHop, and i plan to use it for shared hosting.

    @neXeon: Price is $285usd/Month

What kind of server specs can offer this.

Wow, 285$ for this, you can get a heck of a lot better. Take a look at Limestone Networks. They've reduced their prices a lot recently.

You should be able to do it easily. But you can get there faster offering 5GB plan rather than a 1 GB plan. (Your sites will average much less than 1GB size)

Just on the basis that you are planning to oversell your disk by half I would say not at all.

Also the specs for that price are pretty high, you can find better.

Go with at least 4 core / 8 thread, 12-24+ GB RAM, 4x1TB RAID-10 if you want a good setup.

Even thats not going to get 1000 clients on a box.

OP, go with boxes with less customers per server. Or you are going to find out the hard way that restoring 1000-1500 accounts on a single server after a raid failure or hack is the most stressful and expensive thing you are going to deal with.

Anytime your trying to figure out how many clients you can put on a single server it's just a "Best Guess".
It is totally dependent on the type of websites that will bee hosted like static or dynamic. The number of hits the sites get. The list goes on and on.

IMO it's always best to provide good equipment then NEVER overcrowd the server else your business will suffer greatly, especially in these days when hosting is so cheap and the companies that overcrowd their servers are fast being found out.

Keep a eye on your server resources and be sure that it doesn't reach a capacity where your clients sites don't run at full speed.

    1 million clients, minimum.

we cannot answer your question. it all depends on the individual site types, scripts, and traffic for each customer's sites.

From my experience, I would NOT put 1000 clients on that server, or rather, ANY server. I would advise you to slowly build your client base on your server. Perhaps add enough clients on there and then cut the server off from new clients and move new registrations to a newer server.

Once you are able to determine how stable server #1 is, you can slowly add more clients on there. Remember, the more clients you have on the server, the more stress the server has and the more stress you have in case of a server failure. So keep everything balanced. Don't oversell, and don't overwork your server(s). You can continue to add clients and monitor your clients/server. If some problems rise up, that should tell you something about the server and it's capacity.

We are running over 400 customers on our server but need more staff to handle enquires at this moment.
It all depends on the size of the server and location of customers.

If it's a shared server, it's also a good idea to stick in a big SATA drive and mount it purely for backups, makes for a much faster restore in case of primary drive failure! That doesn't negate the need for offsite too though obviously.
