Question what fills up the /usr dir besides log files?

My /usr directory is 81% full even after I removed all my log files. I did a search for files bigger than 100mb, but didn't find anything that's being written to. Are there smaller daily files perhaps that are being written somewhere?

Run "du -h -d 1" in your /usr dir and find the large dir. cd to that dir and do the same and keep going until you find your large file(s).

In linux, the du options may be different. man du if you need to.

weird. It shows I'm using 1.4G in the /usr directory, but going on cpanel's WHM, it shows /usr is 3.9 GB and I'm using 3.1 GB.

On a Linux system, /usr is the directory that most programs live in, albeit in subdirectories, though.

/usr/local is often used by control panels as well. I don't know about CPanel, but Plesk lives in /usr/local along with all the web sites, again all in subdirectories.

Check /usr/local/apache for any core dumps

I almost have to think it's an error with the cpanel whm.. because the server info on that is showing:
    /dev/sda2 3.9G 3.1G 667M 83% /usr

yet if I run du for the /usr directory, I show a total of 1.5GB used... not only that, but the log files I deleted today were in total larger than 667MB

An error with CPanel? Who ever heard of such a thing?

actually it ended up being some processes that were stuck on huge log files that were delted but still in the filesystem because of the stuck processes... according to nocster support. I'll have to figure out where these are for the future I guess.
