Am I killing my reproductive chances?
So right now, I am sitting here with a laptop sitting on my lap.
I know this article is sortof old, but I just came across it, and it worries me a little bit. There might not be any minislims if my laptop usage continues to skyrocket like this...

All that computer time on the road or at home may be taking more of a toll on some men than they realize.
Reproductive experts warn in a new study that heat generated by laptop computers can have an adverse effect on male fertility.
The study, reported today in the journal Human Reproduction, showed that testicular temperatures rose by between 4.6 and 5 degrees Fahrenheit in an hour among a group of healthy male volunteers.
"Laptops can reach internal operating temperatures of over 158 degrees, they are frequently positioned close to the scrotum and as well as being capable of producing direct local heat, they require the user to sit with thighs close together to balance the machine," said Dr. Yefim Shenykin, associate professor of urology and director of Male Infertility and Microsurgery at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
Shenykin and colleagues worked with 29 healthy volunteers ages 21 to 35, measuring testicular temperatures with and without working laptops during two one-hour sessions.
Previous studies have shown that increases in testicular temperatures between 1.8 and 5.2 degrees have a sustained negative effect on sperm development and fertility.
"The body needs to maintain a proper testicular temperature for normal sperm production and development," Shenykin said. "Portable computers in a laptop position produce scrotal hyperthermia by both the direct heating effect of the computer and the sitting position necessary to balance the computer."
The researcher noted that by next year, about 60 million laptop computers will be in use in the United States and some 150 million worldwide.
"Continued improvements in power, size and price of laptop computers have favored their increased use in younger people, and laptop sales now exceed those of desktop computers," Shenykin said, adding that higher power requirements may generate even more heat.

Surface temperatures of the two brands of computers used in the study increased from nearly 88 degrees at the start of the experiment to nearly 104 degrees after one hour.
Shenykin said "we don't know the exact frequency and time of heat exposure capable of producing reversible or irreversible changes in sperm development" and thus can't say precisely how long it might be possible to use a laptop at each sitting.
"Until further studies provide more information on this type of thermal exposure, teenage boys and young men may want to consider limiting their use of laptop computers on their laps, as long-term use may have a detrimental effect on their reproductive health."
Shenykin said it's possible that some type of external shielding or protective devices might help reduce the effect.
However, he cautioned, "it is essential to confirm the protective effect in a clinical study to prevent advertising and use of inefficient and useless products."

A long time ago, as birth control, men used to wrap a hot wash cloth around their testicles before sex to kill sperm and lower the chances of pregnancy...

Really it's only till July 2nd. Then I will be back to my most environmentally unfriendly, but "boys-friendly" desktop computer, complete with power-sucking UV lights and GPU.
I will not put my laptop on my lap while I am out here for now then. *Takes laptop off lap*

It doesn't matter since you're a nerd and nerds never get laid.

Hmm, it's been a long time since I've seen someone holding a laptop on their lap. Most of the time it's on the desk. Everything's possible, so I'd get a cooling pad like someone suggested.

Have some samples frozen, then you can use the laptop as a reproductive control mechanism as someone suggested.

I bring to attention, a small warning about laptop computers. Might want to check it out before hurting yourself.

Exactly, and these guys are worried about killing their reproductive chances.
Burning yourself down there would kinda ruin your chances for anything!

I never put my laptop on my lap for one simple reason: I don't find it comfy
I much more prefer putting it on a table or something.
btw
didn't they say the same thing with mobiles in your pant's pocket ?

I wish laptops were popular back in October 1946 in Connecticut.
