Question Question for those familiar with Rackshack

    Hello everybody!

I'm new here, and very glad I found this forum. I'd like to direct this question to any of you who are familiar with rackshack's policies on acceptable sites. I know from reading posts here that most of you are resellers to many different sites, and I hope you can help.

Here is an email conversation that I had with Rackshack that has me confused:

hello! will you host adult content?
    thanks,
    steve
    Their reply:

    Sure.
    Thank you,
    Aaron Conklin - Supervisor
I'm confused because their unwillingness to host adult content is plastered all over their AUP pages. Maybe I'm an idiot for even asking them this after I read the AUP? There seems to be an obvious misunderstanding or miscommunication here.

    Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

    Thank you!
    Steve

You are allowed to host legal adult content on any of their dedicated servers. NOT on their virtual hosting accounts.

what about MP3s or warez, or anything on a dedicated server? is this allowed?

I wrote then at the same time I posted, and GAMport was correct:

    Steve,

The AUP states that adult material is forbidden from the virtual server domain accounts that we sell, but you may run it on the dedicated servers.

I can't believe someone really asked this question with making a joke or smiley face at the end.

    Amazing.

I'm talking about on their dedicated servers. For a dedicated server, don't we make our own policies and they just maintain it? Donhost.com doesn't allow software downloads, zips, or mp3s EVEN if the person owns the full rights to the files.

I was just wondering if this is allowed on rackshack.net. What does this "actual bandwidth" mean? Does that mean just traffic or does that mean everything including email, ftp, traffic, and downloads?

Where can I get more information about servers? I want more control over what can be put on the servers themselves. such as downloads, etc.

One more thing, if I get a server, how do I add accounts, delete accounts, etc? Is it all run through the control panels? And on rackshack.net, do my clients hosting with me get their own control panels too?

What is an IP address? I thought you only need one for every server.

actual traffic means everything you use (mail, ftp etc.)

Where can I get more information about servers? I want more control over what can be put on the servers themselves. such as downloads, etc.
Guess what, it's an dedicated server, just yours! You get root, you have control about anything.
by the way, when you're going on a page, you're "downloading" the page...

One more thing, if I get a server, how do I add accounts, delete accounts, etc? Is it all run through the control panels? And on rackshack.net, do my clients hosting with me get their own control panels too?
You can chose between plesk and ensim, but do you have ever wrote the site, or checked the demos?

What is an IP address? I thought you only need one for every server.
Maybe it'll be better when you continue on reselling... However, you can assign multiple ips to a server, so a site from your user would be accessible trough a dedicated ip (at least with virtual hosts and apache). It's the same game for nameservers etc. You may want to check the following site.

Sorry for my english, I'm still learning, I hope you get what I mean

Addtion: Of course you may make your own policies, but it doesn't mean you may break the law...

Yea.. sure Warez dood... send me the address of your current site so I can turn <you> in!

Warez sucks and if you are hosting it.. YOU <stink>!

Sorry for rant folks.. but warez costs the software industry millions annually and it just rankles me that some <one> would be here asking such questions in a ligit forum. Either he's totally unaware of the laws or <not smart> or both!

Are you just trying to be funny or just acting stupid? You're asking can you store illegal software on the server....

You apparantly have a website up advertising hosting.. and you're asking the question, "What is an IP address"?

    Get real ok?

Yea and in re-reading I may have shot from the hip and hit the wrong mark. I think he's wanting to know if they do, not because he wants to host such content, but because he does not want to be where it is hosted.. if so.. My sincere apology to all!

Put another way, you will have a terms of service that you will have to abide by from your server provider. You're on their network, and thus they won't allow you to run that illegal MP3 download site, that free paid program site, nor that kiddie porn site you've been wanted to run. You abide by their terms, but for example, if they allow adult material on the server you lease, that doesn't mean you have to allow it for your customers. Your TOS can state, no adult content permitted.

$#IT you guys are rude. I'm learning about this whole having my own server thing. You all have to ***** a little bit. shortfork, I was shocked at your rude response but read on to see that you did actually reread my posts and know what I was meaning. I accept your appology.

rastoma, please come back down to earth and actually try to help someone with a question instead of smashing them like in all the other threads as well.

    Anyways....
When I asked about MP3s and Warez earlier, I did not mean I would host such illegal sites. I was just wondering if I own complete 100% policies for my own server. Why don't you people who barked at me simply reread my posts if you don't understand. I made reference to donhost explaining that they don't allow ANY downloads in zip, mp3, exe, avi, etc. If I have my own server, I figured I would be the one who made the policies.

Chicken....really.....let's both agree. That is not my kiddie porn site you want hosted, that is yours. Please stop sending me screenshots of your new "KiddieDelight" website. lol. just joking. I guess I would get angry at that warez questions as well if I didn't understand it.

All is forgiven. Sorry for the trouble. (at least I make things interesting right? lol)

Hey, I went to edit/delete my above post but for some reason it doesn't let me. If people take it the wrong way, I appologize but I reread it and wanted to change it.

    Thanks!

Well, people may have been rude, because these questions are questions you attend to get from a newbie, not somebody who runs his own webhosting company...

Personally, I'd rather pay someone to run my server than me having to manually run it. That is what I do. For those who can't afford to pay a staff, kudos to you for being forced to learn such languages. I am interested in learning more for client sake.

    HAHAHAHa

    LOL
