Uses of VPS
Hi
My question may be high level of stupidity but what are other uses of a web server or VPS ?
Generally we use server for hosting websites, mails, and DNS
Are there any other uses of it ?

It's just a computer really, so you can do whatever you want with it, including:
- Hosting other things (IRC servers, game servers etc.)
- Replacement desktop machine, permanently accessible 24/7
- Seedbox
- Just to play with█ GigaTux, Value Linux Hosting
█ UK, US and Germany based Xen VPS. Reliability is key! Quick support response and 99.9% SLA.

We've noticed an uptick in interest for people doing voip services as well as vpn's/proxy's from countries that seem to be a little more strict on what their populace are 'allowed' to see.

You could use it as:
- Webserver
- Gameserver ( need plain resources for this )
- Play thing
whatever you would put on a normal server

This being webhostingtalk probably means that the majority of the people here use servers for webhosting. I personally use mine as a game server, irc client and a mail server.

You could install vnc + open office and use it like a regular "desktop".

I haven't got a VPS, but you could use it for off-site storage of personal files or small business data, anything that's non-copyrighted. Check your TOS before uploading anything that may be in violation.

I think the better question is, what can I "NOT" use a VPS for. Generally a VPS can be used for anything that's server related as long as it doesn't go with the provider's TOS/AUP. I would say the most popular use for VPS are VPN as users like to browse anonymously.

-email servers (it is great for things like zimbra)
collaboration suits
-svn/cvs hosting usually with track or bugzilla
-voip server (asterisk) if you have people in multiple location that need to talk to each other
-programming testbed
-proxy servers
-vnc/nx server (i use nx myself just to have all my data when doing something in one location)
-messenging server (jabber)
-ecommerce (doesn't necessarly mean webshop)
- many more that I can't think of at the momentEuropean Xen based VPS Hosting

You need to watch the providers Terms if you are going to the above activity.
im glad you put the there.....
Could not agree with you more here.
Other use would be a dev web server. If you have a production application but need a dev server to test new patches on.. a vps would be great for that. Also dns servers (the more the better) and mail hubs for more then one route into your core mail system.
