    Hi Guys,

I am newbie to VPS. I see lot of them offering multiple static ips for free. Can someone please explain me how to make best use of them?

    Thanks.

If you don't know how to use them, then you don't need a vps.

I have to take a vps as the application i am going to build needs 2 ports and 512 ram. Any other solution other than VPS is welcome.

    Thanks.

Ok you have domain1.com and doman2.com.
You also have a ssl cert that covers domain2.com
Therefore you need 2 IP's one for domain1.com and one for domain2.com.
If your not using ssl certs you can have 1,000+ domains on a single IP.

I got the SSL and SEO part. But if I want to host only 1 site, then multiple IPs aren't much use :-s

In most people's opinions, SEO doesn't need multiple IPs, and SEO is not valid justification for getting more IPs. SSL is easier to accomplish if you have one IP per site, but there are ways around it.

If you have a VPS with two IPs, sometimes it's nice just to put your webserver on one and SSH on the other, in case people go poking around where they shouldn't be.

    Thanks for your views.

    I read this article:
    http://www.seroundtable.com/archives/002358.html

Logically it ties up for SEO needing static IP.
Having one for site/SSL/SEO and SSH on separate IP explains two, but what about 4-6 IPs and more people look for :-o.

As ZanyHost said, because you can only really have one SSL certificate (HTTPS) per IP address (as this is sent before the HTTP request is received), someone will need 4-6 IPs if they are hosting 4-6 https sites and don't want users to get certificate errors when accessing secure pages.

    Okay got it.

So its 1 IP address per hosted site for SEO/SSL and 1 IP address per account for SSH and may be a seperate 1 for FTP.

Thanks guys, solves the mystery for me :-)

    Cheers!

What are vanity hosts ... am a newbie.

Email you mean pop/smtp.. is it .. there we don't need a static IP, it can be managed without .. isn't it?

Spamming .. ah oh.. no good :|

Close! There's no problem with hosting 1 HTTP, 1 HTTPS/SSL, 1 SSH and 1 FTP server on one IP address.

The only issue is where it comes to hosting multiple HTTPS/SSL sites. So, if you were to host 4 HTTPS/SSL sites, you only really need 4 IP addresses, as all the other servers will happily share an IP address.

Say if you have 10 static IPs assigned to your VPS. You can utilize:

    - One IP can be kept as your main shared IP of your VPS.
    - Second IP for your main domain and which can also be used for your domains SSL.
    - Third and Fourth can be used for your private nameservers. ( shared IP also works)
    - Rest of the IPs can be given to your clients to have SSL on their site . So you can make money out of it. For ex. 6 IPs * $4/mo = $24/mo . You can earn $24/mo from the remaining IPs.

    Thanks Inspiron.
But I am taking a VPS for hosting my own site then these extra static ips aren't much use to me. Are they?
