Need a colocation provider in the uk + advice

Hey there, firstly advice - Im about to buy myself a nice new dell R210 II with a e3-1270 and 8 gig of ram, I'm going to running mostly source games and I know that estimating server capacity is hard but could anyone give me a rough idea of the numbers I might be able to host?

Im going to be running 4 very modded garrys mod servers and the rest on source and cs:go when it is released. Would it be worth getting an extra 6 gig of ram or wouldn't I use it? Also since I'm going to be running garrys mod and there will be a lot of downloading from the server would it be worth getting multiple hard drives or just invest in a slightly more expensive one for quicker downloading/map changes? Thanks for any advice you can give me on these topics.

Finally I'm looking for a colocation provider in the uk - I was going to use killercreation as they give a really nice price as long as you keep within the power allocation (they were asking 50£ a month with unlimited gaming bandwidth) but they are not getting any more space for a bit - does anyone else have any good suggestions where to go?

    so four things

    numbers I can hold?
more ram? from 8 to 16 gig
    harddrives?
    colocation provider?

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,

I cant advise on hardware recommendations as I haven't had the experience of running game servers.

But I would assume the more RAM the better. Disk I/O is something else to consider i.e. whether running RAID is worth while or if you need SAS/SSD drives rather than SATA to maximise the servers performance and how many players it can handle.

But what I would add is that you should specify your location and/or whether you want or need the data centre to be fairly local or whether you're going to rely on remote hands.

Also be sure to check for latency from your PC to any potential providers you look at.

Some providers will have more hops than others, not just because they may be further away but because hops aren't as important for websites but for streaming or game servers it is more important to keep latency to a minimum

I'm sure there is a data centre in Gloucester that is geared towards gaming servers but I can't think of the name.

Just an FYI in case you were specially after Manchester Colocation, we've now moved out of the facility we were at in Manchester as the service wasn't up to our standards.

There's a place in Manchester called IceColo and also burstnet.eu offer colocation in the same Datacenter.

I've heard mixed reviews about it though...

    Thanks

Just to note, we have our own 147 rack facility (IceColo) in Trafford Park. We're building our 2nd 300 rack facility adjacent to our current one also.

Numerous network issues spanning several months that despite assurances did not seem to get addressed (or at least not in a timely fashion) but more importantly, poor communication from the management (and a shockingly bad/arogant attitude from at least one of them too!)

I must add, this wasn't an overnight thing or a cost saving excercise, we were a multi rack client for a a number of years and moving cost us in the region of £xx,000 (relocation fees, new rack setup fees, lost customers etc).

    Hi

We have several racks with icecolo. They did last year have a few networking problems, but I do know that they have done tons of network changes this month that's being rolled out to everyone soon.

I'd highly recommend icecolo, 3 years we've been with them and overall an amazing company.

    Greetings,

We've had experience with IceColo but it was fairly poor -- sub-par support, network was only just mediocre e.t.c. If you're looking at Manchester please ping an email to james[at]theukcloud[dot]com. He has rack space at Telecity's Synergy House which is probably one of the better UK data centres.

Best of luck with your search!

Darn I thought I had this sorted, I decided to go with 16 gig of ram since I will be running gmod - then just as I go to buy dell starts complaining about the OS not being able to support 16 gig. Could someone please tell me which OS is best for source games in general and supports 16 gig so I can finnaly get this server - Thanks!

16GB of RAM will be no issue with most 64bit O/S's. For simplicity and good support, just stick with Centos 6.2 which should work on your Dell no problem at all.

Sorry for the delay, I've been a little busy to check WHT as often as I normally would this past week but yes, that's not an issue.
