I just hired a web designer, and she just finished my layout. It seems nice to me, but I would like a more professional view. I'm also open minded for suggestions.
The layout is located in http://www.walstonet.com/empire/

    Thumbs down Site

Man that looks like some one needs to take Photo Shop 101 over. You might want to find a anther designer not to sound mean but my sales guy could do better then that.

Hell if this is your site now ( http://www.walstonet.com/ ) it looks 10 times better the new one.

Don't take me the wrong way I am very picky!!

Could you please be more specific like this I can explain politely why I'm not happy with her work. Speaking of which walstonet.com is actually the designer's site. http://www.empirehost.com is my site.

    Site

Well her site is not bad but man your sites need a look of work I am no design I have about 5 that work for me.
I am not sure what you are paying here but if she does not get much better give us call I would be glad to help you out.

Here is our site still in the works for the most part http://www.vortechhosting.com

If I was to try to be specific on them 2 sites on what needs to be fix i would be here all nite. They need a lot of work. Look around at some of the bigger sites to get some ideas.

Here ar emy top 5 fav.
    http://www.vortechhosting.com (My Site of course!)
    http://www.site5.com
    http://www.verio.com
    http://www.pwebtech.com
    http://www.hostopia.com

Don't copy any of these site but get some good ideas from them.
Once you have a basic template it is easy from there on out. Get your page layed out like you want it spend time looking around getting ideas come up with new ones. But the blue to black background has to go man.

I mean site and look at your site for a hour or so and ask your self would i buy from here. Does this look as good or better then the next guy if not fix it. Do this till you fell 100% safe with this site. Then go with it and build from that.
It takes time to get what you want in your site. When we started i thought the site looked ok. We have changed every thing on the site now colors lay out every thing 6 times to get to what it is now and i am happy with it right now. But still not 100% we still have a lot more work to do on it but its getting there.

I hope this helps in some way. Keep trying you well get it sooner or latter.

The site does not look like a web designer made it at all. If you are paying for it I would definitely have it remade. Any designers with little photoshop ability could make that. Plus, it looks very unprofessional.

Are you sure you hired a "web designer?"? She seems no more than a grandmaster at website cloning to me

http://www.guistuff.com <-- Does this look painfully familiar?

BTW, that template that she created for you is nowhere near professionalism. And if she really needs you to tell her why/how, she probably aint worth keeping

Hi! I'm a shareware signature! Send $5 if you use me, send $10 for manual!

Also the site does not display correctly in my Netscape 4.7. IE displays ok.

Get a refund as fast as you can and find someone else. A template is in fact not a bad idea, but you should pick one yourself, there is plenty of better ones and it is sure cheaper than paying a designer. Maybe look at imagecafe.com , they have some buisness appeal templates. They`re charging 99$ for 5 templates, so maybe you can sell the 4 other templates to you designer and make a profit

You can always go to http://www.sitepointforums.com and go down to the barter thread. Then offer something like a link exchange and a gift certificate for the winner of the template design that you choose.

    Hey Guys

Thank you so much for the advice but I believe you guys are looking at the wrong site. If you look at the top of the thread, I said to look at http://www.walstonet.com/empire. On this link there is a layout for the new design which my designer has made. The black on blue design at empirehost.com is what I designed myself and I know it crap :-) Please check layout in http://www.walstonet.com/empire and tell me if my designer is starting in the right direction.

I'm a bit confused.... Sorry to sound ignorant but..
The so-called 'layout' is like the template ( http://www.guistuff.com/guispecs.shtml?0043 ) schweiz pointed out. If it is the case, get your refund and go look for another web-designer..

    whose your designer?

    sharkman,

I hope you didn't pay your designer a design fee yet because... putting it bluntly, i think you got ripped off by your "designer."

I hate when these things happen but since the internet is open to everyone... sometimes, people make mistake of thinking: "oh, im going to take this off of this site and put my name on it without giving credit to the original person who made it"

if your designer said that he DESIGNED that whole navigation, then as acetate said... get a full refund and get a new designer.

if your designer just ADDED the text - (III EMPIRE HOST III at the top, and Text Link down the left)... then well, i don't know what to say.

for the whole design itself, i personally don't like it. the color itself is inappropriate and i think that the contrast is way too high for a nav bar. and lastly, i don't even think that the dark grey background color mismatches the color scheme of the nav bar.

    go talk to your "designer"
but frankly, he doesn't seem to design appropriately

You're right - a lot of people are looking at the wrong site. Unfortunately, that doesn't change much.

Her template (the one that has a blue side and top with gold borders) looks totally unprofessional. I guess it'd be good for some sort of medival fan site, but not a business. I can't articulate why, I just know it looks off. Especially for a "professional" design.

Personally, I think your design is much better, though it could use some work. Neither template is 640x480 friendly.

I can`t see one person here that have looked at the wrong site (except maybe projo).

The designer tried to fool you, and the design wasn`t good either....... that`s all there is to it, as all the posts above are saying.

Both schweiz, acetate, and Matrix refered to http://www.guistuff.com which looks nothing like the site in question, but like the "designer"'s personal page.

Yes, because that "designer" just used a freely accessible (and unprofessional-looking) template from guistuff.com and is apparently trying to sell it as her own work. She also uses a free template for her own page.
    Compare these two...
    http://www.walstonet.com/empire/
    http://www.guistuff.com/guispecs.shtml?0043
    ...and these two:
    http://www.walstonet.com
    http://www.guistuff.com

    About the template/design itself:
Dark background is bad for business sites, reminds people too much of porn-sites or cheap personal homepages (just look around, no big business uses black backgrounds).
The golden edges of the menu are far too thick, distracting from the content.

    Mage,

I'm not refering to guistuff.com. If you look at my post and click on the link that I gave you will see a template thats free on guistuff.com that the designer is using for sharkmans new site.

    Here it is again:

My error - you're right (of course

I hope there's a contract involved here so damages can be sought.
