    godaddy for a forum

I have a forum that is currently hosted on Invisionzone. I was on their Advanced Package which offered 15 GB of bandwidth, but I guess this wasn't enough, because I exceeded my bandwidth and I couldn't access my site for almost a day. So I bumped up to their Pro Package at 25 GB of bandwidth.

My site has over 27,ooo posts, 581 members, and the most users I had online at one time was 50. I don't know if this would classify my site as busy or not.

I ask about Godaddy because, even though I have done a ton of searches on them in this forum, and have read bad reviews about them, I thought maybe since my site is just a forum, and nothing complicated or flashy, they would be an okay choice for me. I was interested in a VPS, but after reading all that goes into managing one, I am sure that I could not handle it. I am new to web hosting.

Godaddy's Premium Plan is just so enticing. You get 200 GB of bandwidth (that's a lot!) for $19.95, as opposed to the plan I'm on now - 25 GB for $30. How the hell can they be so cheap? Would I be making a huge mistake to move my forum to them?

I have no experience with GoDaddy hosting personally, but I agree that 200GB does seem a lot for $19.95. I'm presuming they're overselling to some degree.

I would say that their uptime 'guarantee' isn't really much cop, so if reliability - and appropriate compensation if it's not met - is paramount, you might want to consider somewhere with a better guarantee.

It might also be worth clarifying what this really means: Go Daddy prohibits the use of software or scripts run on its servers that cause the server to load beyond a reasonable level, as determined by Go Daddy as, I presume, you'll be expecting your forum to grow in the future.

Other than that, it might be worth waiting to see if anyone with first hand experience of GoDaddy posts here, or you could do a search on these forums to find out what's been said about them before.

My advice is: always have a recent back-up of your site & database on your own computer, regardless of the host you choose, but especially if you go for a "budget" one. If you are asked to move (or upgrade) because of "resources abuse", at least you'll have your data and be able to move anywhere you want.

How the hell can they be so cheap?
It is my personal opinion that even economy of scale can't explain it, so overselling must be part of their business model. It's not necessarily a bad thing, as it depends on how well they can handle it.

My own experience with Godaddy is that I have a simple webpage, and it works well. I have seen a lot of posts by others complaining of problems when their needs get a little more complicated than that. It's just a guess, but I suspect that the high storage and transfer for the price may come from skimping on the tech support.

GoDaddy has a track record of disabling websites that generate a high server load. If your site uses vBulletin, then you may want to be wary signing up with GoDaddy.

I would avoid GoDaddy for all hosting, just use the for domains. Find a host with good reviews, and you'll be a lot happier.

Please, Stay Away from Godaddy !!

If you appreciate your Mental Health then :

Please don't sign up with Godaddy for a Forum.

I made that HORRIBLE mistake. On February, 11 of 2005 I signed up for a hosting account with Godaddy.

A tiniy baby phpBBForum. Just doing experiments and learning. Almost no visitors except a few friends.

    1) First 5 days of nothingness. I made the Name Server Changes, but since the name was "for sale" ... Godaddy did not do the Home Work !! ....... Godaddy's Poor programming !!!

    2) Slowness Ensued. So I bought a Dedicated IP Address. 4 DAYS OF TOTAL COLLAPSE. Godaddy installed the IP Address in a different server from the Domain Name. 4 DAYS OF TOTAL DOWNTIME.

    3) Many events of 2, 3 or 4 MINUTES to load the Home Page of my Forum.

    4) Many events of DNS Resolution Failure.

Godaddy always blamed the ATT Network for the delays and failures. And they started to blame my ISP in Colombia, South America. They denied the charge furiously and challenged everybody to see that every American Website worked at the speed of light here. Only Godaddy failed.

Other websites of me and my family in CheapBW ( California ), Hostsale and other friends worked perfectly without the Godaddy malfunctions.

I moved from Godaddy to Beachcomber.net after 50 days of failures and even foolishness on the part of Godaddy like

GODADDY SUPPORT DENYING THAT I WAS A CUSTOMER
GODADDY SUPPORT DENYING THAT I WAS A CUSTOMER
GODADDY SUPPORT DENYING THAT I WAS A CUSTOMER

For a day Godaddy denied that I was their customer for Hosting after having paid 3 bills. !!! .... And I didn't owe them any money. Can you believe that ???

Finally Godaddy admited the possibility of a SERVER HOG and offered me a plan of US $35 per month. To avoid the SERVER HOG of a Forum that had no visitors and was only an experiment.

    Can you believe that ???

In the 20 days that I have been in

    Beachcomber.net ( Arizona )

everything works fine and the Support is Superb. They are courteous, polite and kind. You never feel humilliated.

And they have never denied that I am their customer.

Francese and JSW : Thanks for replies

Friends Francese, JSW and others :

I am sure that there are excellent web hosters for phpBB Forums, besides Beachcomber.net that has been excellent for me during the 3 weeks that I have been their customer. Speed is OK as seen from my post in Colombia, South America. My nightmare is over.

In Beachcomber you don't have to pay setup fees or several monts at once. Just one month for 8 dollars or so. And I have unlimited databases, that means several phpBB Forums. I have an additional one to perform experiments.

These experiments, tests, trials, evaluations are very important in order to modify your Forum Styles ( colors, separator bars, fonts, etc ... ) and also to experiment with phpBB mods ( modifier programs ) and hacks.

I am very interested in the possibility of running XSLT inside the Forum Posts. For example to offer products from a Big eTailer.

The XSLT would bring an automatic datafeed from another server ( image, price, availability, etc ... ).

But I am not sure if that can be done in phpBB with the present version. Or if someone has developed a mod or hack to do so.

What I have seen is crazy animations, funny smilies doing tricks for children, stravagant flashes or flashy stravaganzas. All of them inside phpBB posts.

These guys have a mod to include HTML inside phpBB posts :

    See the Playful Smilies :

    http://www.phpmix.com/index.php?page...2aab54773fd298

There are weird reports and rumors that there is a [doHTML] instruction tag inside phpBB but I have never been able to operate it after many hours of tries and I have never seen a single guy that does something with that mysteryous tag if it ever existed. Was it retired from active service ????????

I suggest that if we are developing phpBB Forums, then we should consider the possible launching of automatic datafeeds for products, news, advertising, affiliations, etc ...

I don't know if that is possible and I would thank any suggestions from many clever programmers that populate this WHT Forum.

    Thanks for any help.

I would also not suggest to consider a comapny who is a specialist for domain registration to consider for the domain hosting. I am aware of the record that goddady has but at the same time it is a fact that there are far more negative reviews about godaddy. They are no doubt the very very good domain registrars but in the context of the domain hosting they still have a long way to go.

    Two brief points:

    1. GoDaddy is a host well-known to be crappy. Don't go for it.

    2. JFYI: forum is one of the most intensive scripts. Flash doesn't load the server, but the forum bogs it pretty well. Not with your volumes, though - you may be easy about going with any host, you won't overload it.
First Amendment of a webhost: if you fail to prepare, prepare to fail.

I think a smaller hosting company with a good resume would take better care of your forum if you get problems. You are more important to them.

  15. #15
Their VPS's are unmanaged, so if you went that route, be prepared!

  16. #16
I'm convinced not to go with them. It would definitely not be worth the hassle. Thanks for the advice everyone.

    Your Business is very Important

    Francese :

You said in your First Post :

My site has over 27,ooo posts, 581 members, and the most users I had online at one time was 50. I don't know if this would classify my site as busy or not.
That is a very beautiful base of a Forum and the Base of a Business. I congratulate you and I can only envy you ( but without bad and wicked feelings, only as a desire to emulate you ).

I have had a lot of trouble starting my Forum and getting visitors. It seems that this requires a lot of skill, marketing, advertising, etc ....

My Baby Forum started from Zero Visitors, Zero Interest, and I made the mistake of signing up with Godaddy.

Everything, absolutely everything went wrong. Not only the 9 days of Total Downtime but the other 41 days were also a constant pain of Random Failures like 2, 3 or 4 MINUTES to load the Home Page. And many DNS Resolution Errors.

With the new Web Hoster Beachcomber.net things have worked and operated as they should and I thank that corporation for providing a safe harbor from the nightmare that Godaddy was for me.

Since your Forum has a lot of traffic. .... You could have lost a lot of Money and Time if subjected to the same regime of failures that Godaddy imposed on me.

Being in a far location in another continent ( as my case is ) should not mean that we are constantly in Hell condemned or damned eternally to Poor Service and Delays of Many Minutes to Load the Home Page. Or to go to the DEDICATED SERVER of many dollars/month as Godaddy wanted me to change my newborn or stillborn baby Forum.

And Beachcomber.net has proved that THE LITTLE ENGINE COULD.

I receive no money or privileges from Beachcomber.net

    Best Regards and Good Luck.

    Vicente
