Cannot connect to Verizon's mail server

    Hi,
I recently noticed that we cannot send emails to Verizon.net customers. We just receive a message back from our server saying:
Mail delivery failed: returning message to sender
This message was created automatically by mail delivery software.

A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its
recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed:

    someuserremoved at verizon.net
    retry timeout exceeded
We can receive from them but cannot send and they say that we are not blacklisted.

Here are our dns records (changed the domain and IP for privacy):

    mydomain.com. A 64.86.25.###
    ftp A 64.86.25.###
    localhost A 127.0.0.1
    mail A 64.86.25.###
    pop A 64.86.25.###
    www A 64.86.25.###
    mydomain.com. NS ns1.mydns.com.
    mydomain.com. NS ns2.mydns.com.
    mail MX 10
    mydomain.com. TXT "v=spf1 a mx ip4:64.86.25.### ?all"
From ssh shell I cannot telnet or ping their mail server:
    sh>> nslookup -type=mx verizon.net
    Server: 64.86.25.###

    Non-authoritative answer:
    verizon.net mail exchanger = 0 relay.verizon.net.

Authoritative answers can be found from:
    verizon.net nameserver = ns2.verizon.net.
    verizon.net nameserver = ns2.bellatlantic.net.
    verizon.net nameserver = ns4.verizon.net.
    verizon.net nameserver = ns1.bellatlantic.net.
    relay.verizon.net internet address = 206.46.232.11

    sh>> telnet relay.verizon.net 25
    Trying 206.46.232.11...
telnet: connect to address 206.46.232.11: Connection timed out
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection timed out

    sh>> ping verizon.net

    sh>> ping relay.verizon.net
    PING relay.verizon.net (206.46.232.11) 56(84) bytes of data.

    --- relay.verizon.net ping statistics ---
10 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 8997ms
Anybody having this problem or had this problem?

    Suggestions will be much appreciated
    Regards,
    Nara

Hmmm.... might want to call Verizon's NOC and see if they've blocked your IP/range for some reason.

    Regards,
Okay, was worth a try. If you do find a working phone # to the Verizon NOC or engineer group, e-mail/contact the guy who runs that web site so he can update the list to benefit everyone.

Verizon.net is using a whitelist only system... Or trying to when it seems to function.. I've encountered this with several legit large corporations and ISP's trying to send mail to them.. Sometimes their smtp servers will not respond(when their whitelist system is broke), sometimes you'll get the 550 rejection, you'll have to look in your SMTP logs:

    http://www2.verizon.net/micro/whitelist/ (use the ISP form)

expect a reply in two weeks or longer. Until then you'll have to relay the mail through a server already on their whitelist. Don't be suprised if you are denied, they pay close attention to whois information, reverse lookups, spf records, abuse contact, and past history from the requesting IP block. I've personally seen 3 corporations in the Fortune 500 become rejected after a whitelist request, and they are just flat out unable to send mail to any verizon customers.
