Thread: Google Porn!

    Google Porn!

Was looking up basketball today and when I went into this category http://directory.google.com/Top/Spor...l/Directories/ I clicked on the top link http://www.urhoops.com/ and it went right to a porn site. To think that some kids are going here casually and finding this too. This goes to show how great of a job the staff does with the google directory and why they still have yet to index any of my sites.

Way to go google! And shame on the sick pervert taking advantage of this.

To the best of my knowledge, Google doesn't eliminate porn sites from searches unless you use their Google SafeSearch. I have added Google search to my site but when I did so, I was allowed to pick between the regular Google search and Google SafeSearch.

Many Google users prefer not to have adult sites included in their search results. Google's SafeSearch screens for sites that contain this type of information and eliminates them from search results. While no filter is 100% accurate, Google's filter uses advanced proprietary technology that checks keywords and phrases, URLs and Open Directory categories.
When SafeSearch is turned on, sites and web pages containing pornography and explicit sexual content are blocked from search results.

...So the way I understand it, is if you aren't using Google SafeSearch, you can definitely have results displayed that have adult content.

I remember once typing in the URL usmaps.com which at the time -- a few years ago -- went to a porn site. Who would have thought that looking up a US Map would display porn!?!?!?

This is simply a strategy of finding an expired domain name that is still listed in a directory. I wasn't talking about a search at all. This is similiar to the yahtool strategy. Seems like a great way to grab some traffic but I have better things to do with my time than bet on this.

    Speaking of Yahtool,
Has anyone found anything like it, but better?

Until the end of 2001 it was a basketball website:

Now the balls are smaller and softer

Well, exactly. So you can't really blame Google. Do you expect them to regularly check every link in the directory to make sure that it's still on topic?

Google's directory is taken from an RDF dump from dmoz/Open Directory -- so blaming Google's "staff" for this or for your site not being listed is completely a misunderstanding of how it works.

Generally Open Directory editors catch this kind of stuff eventually, but it depends on the individual editor. The editor for this catagory can be found by viewing the category above it in dmoz, here: http://dmoz.org/Sports/Basketball/Yo...d_High_School/

You can send an email to that editor by following a link from that page. That would be much more likely to solve the problem than would posting about it here!

Yeah... too bad their spider is so stupidly aggressive. I've denied them from all of my domains. Too bad; it could be a good resource.
